the nerve of some people
I used to work for a finance company. I liked the company, but with having another child born recently I needed to look for other work since none was avab with them, so after finding another job I quit. Long story long the new job I found was not at all what was promised and I was let go. So now I collect unemployment thru the company that I quit from. Well I now am trying to get into the notary field I signed up for work with my old company and they approved me!! here's the kicker because I getting unemployment my ex boss won't hire me to work at his branch!!! It's not like the money is coming out of his pocket! It not like the company hasn't approved me!! He just wants to hate that I can get paid and spend time with my kids. and he is at work 50+ hours a week and missing his kid grow up!!
any suggestions!?!

Re: Congrats on baby! Unemployment does cost
the previous employer money maybe not his pocket but perhaps his bonus. I don't think he is envious of your getting paid and spending time with your kids. He may like working 50 hours a week, and as for missing his kids growing up that is a choice he makes and is of no concern to you. Move on and good luck in your new career.

Re: Unemployment does cost the employer..
I believe when you collect unemployment it results in an increase in the unemployment tax the employer must pay to the state.

Re: Unemployment does cost the employer..Tamara
Unemployment is generally considered insurance for the worker who becomes unemployed by no desire of their own.
Every time an employer has a claim, they have to pay a higher amount the next quarter and for many years thereafter. It most certainly is coming from the company's coffers.

Working and drawing unemployment?
I think you're lucky he doesn't call the state and rat you out.

In fact, Tamara should be sure that someone from this board will rat her out now that she's posted. Not me, I assure you, but the system is burdened by people using it.
Tamara - if I were you, I'd report every dime I make now that you blew the whistle on yourself on this board. Not being ugly...just telling you it's likely your competition will seize the opportunity.
I do feel that you probably did not realize you were not being real honest if you are not reporting your income. However, read the info you received from the employment folks. In Texas, every penny you make while drawing unemp benefits counts against your benefit. They'll fine the crap out of you if they find out you are not revealing all income.

He is right Tamara, as a matter of fact many, years ago when I was 18 yrs old I did a similar thing and although I only cashed about 3 checks not even $900 worth of money, I got fined $3,800 for it! Watch out.

managed to NOT say just enough - she didn't say she was working - she said she's trying to get into the notary field but although approved by the company her old boss won't hire her at his branch - if she hasn't made any money at this yet I think she's okay - if she is just starting out and has made a small amount she might be able to nip any issues in the bud before they get out of control.

Re: Working and drawing unemployment?
When I was laid off in CA, I came back home to FL and started my F/T NSA business. It was the unemployment that kept me going while building my business. You can work and collect unemployment as long as you report the income you make while collecting unemployment. The hard part about it is you report the income the week you EARN it and not the week you actually get paid. In this business, you could be reporting income you will never collect.

Having run a small business in Radcliffe
The commonwealth of Kentucky has a very high cost unemployment insurance system. Most of it is because of the mining out East is always up and down and also because of the high rate of Fraud in the mining and manufacturing industry. If I were you, I'd get on the straight and narrow and move on. JMO

My first suggestion would be to not use that email address for your Signing Agent business, I would get a more professional sounding email addy. My .02 Good luck!

Re: General questions from a newbie...
Read thread 33325, print it, and follow all the advice there. It's a NSA course all by itself - and far more beneficial than any day long course as it is from those who live it and work it.
For the comment about your email addy - I second that advice. If you're a serious business woman, a cutsie-pixy email addy simply isn't appropriate and just makes you sound like a 16 yr old.
When you call Sylvia, know that you got lucky and you'll get the best advice in the business, so treat it like what it is...precious!

From another point of view....
Did you quit or were you let go? You stated it both ways.
Usually, quiting would be considered a disqualifing act and thus make you ineligible to UI. If you quit due to some sort of harrasment from the employer, you could still get UI and this would explain the reluctance of him using your services.
If you were laid off, you would get UI based on your final pay and weekly income.
Not trying to cloud the issue, just giving another point of view of your original statement.

Re: Raimond
She said she "quit" after having the baby and no work was available - got another job that didn't work out and they "let her go" (second employer)

You can hardly blame him. Not only will his premiums go up, but it does cost him (every day) for your unemployment checks.
Also, it it were me in his position? I'd seriously consider contacting the State and letting them know you're working on the side, and have other income. You may be up front about reporting that but if I were paying the price of your UI, I'd have the motivation to turn you in.
Just pointing out how he (may) perceive the situation.

Just to clear up the issue....NO at the time that I wrote the post I was NOT working I was just trying to break into the field. I did my first closing on Wednesday and have an appointment with my unemployment case worker to let them know about it. Let me make this clear I am religiously honest person I am not going to try to cheat the system. Nor do I want to depend on the system. I want to earn my keep raise my kids. And as to the thing that my ex boss might have felt it in his pocket belive me he doesn't. The company I used to work for is in the top 5 of the largest banks in the world. And nothing comes out of his personal pocket not even his branches pocket. He is just being the bum that he was when i worked with him.
