Harry, Inquiring minds want to know
How is your Certification/BGC program progressing? I'm sure that there are many out here like me that would rather give our money to you than to the NNA. But as we're all starting to get emails about not being able to work for a number of companies after Dec. 1 if we don't have the BGC, we may feel that we're being forced to submit to the extortion and rejoin the NNA. Please post an update if possible.

I'm interested too - but Dorothy keep in mind - some of those e-mails are also requiring NNA certification - I hope Harry can get around that...

Linda
Harry can get around it.
There is a reason that lenders can't choose what homeowners insurance companies their borrowers use. You have the right to choose who you do business with. You can buy BIC pens or you can buy papermate. You can choose Hellman's (my preference) or Kraft. Heinz or Hunts? whaatevva.
NOBODY can tell you you MUST get it from HERE or ELSE! Any company that would put say such things (especially in writing) is begging to have lawyers knocking at their doors.

We have a very good handle on background checks and are working on a competitive alternative. However, in my conversations with various title companies, strange things are coming to light that are inconsistent with a lot of what you've probably been reading. Given what I have gathered so far, I would not be surprised if an FTC action is taken at some point.
At this time, we strongly recommend that everyone wait until at least 2007 before considering a third-party background check. Some title companies have their own in-house background check options - which will not cost you a dime - and many others support open competition and free trade, meaning they should be willing to recognize and support alternatives.
I will follow-up on this issue some time in the next few weeks.

Such a huge relief
Thank you thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU! This is wonderful to read and to know.
This is a little hard to believe, but ... I think I'm at a loss for words. It can be hard sometimes, not being privy to all that's coming down that carries such a huge potential impact on what you are and what you do.

I am still not convinced that this certification is a federal requirement. It is not a state requirement. In order to be a notary, you cannot be convicted of a crime. In Maryland, we have to be licensed, another way to stab our pockets, we had to have a background check then. Who else will I have to prove it to, the borrower.
I'm sick of this.

Re: Certification is not a federal requirement
hands down, no way. Otherwise, every notary in the country would have to be "certified" in order to notarize loan documents that might be requested of them.

Re: Certification is not a federal requirement
Todate I have yet to recieve Anything, from anyone regarding background checks. The majority of work I do is for Title/Escrow companies. So I'm sure if this "background check" was mandatory we all would of heard from our States' stating that December deadline or we will not be able work without the Security Clearance. Being Certified ? well in my opinion certification is something that's good to do when you start just to expand your knowledge. If you are a full-time notary you are always abreast of changes and new laws (or at least you should be!)
Lastly, I agree with Harry. Don't be in such a big hurry, take a "wait-see" attitude and hang-on to your hard earned bucks.
My best to you all.
