Journal ? Re Sign by Mark
Any California Notaries know how your journal is signed when the person you are acknowledging is signing by mark? Handbook says witnesses are not required to sign journal but how should journal be handled by person being acknowledged?
Thank you in advance.

It may not be required but everyone involved signs my journal and thumbprint, overkill is best in this case.

Page 14 of the California Handbook addresses this. http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/notary/notary_hdbk.pdf
However, like Della, I also have them id, sign and get a thumbprint.

Page 14 of the Handbook also says that "A notary public is not required to identify the two persons who witnessed the signing by mark or to have the two witnesses sign the notary public's journal". It does not say however if the X is to be done in the book. I would of course get thumbprint of signer by X in my book. But not sure what else is required since handbook does not address signer in its reference.

Notarized dozens of Signed by Mark documents. If the signer has produced satisfactory ID the 2 witnesses do not sign your journal. On the journal signature line always write signed by mark. As an additional step, I also get a right thumbprint of the signer in my journal. Always log in additional information for future reference.
