NNA Membership

Who knows how many notaries are NNA members?
I know the approx.# of notaries in USA is 4.5 MM
If NNA is only source for BGC they will not be able to noterize mortgages unless the comply.

Stop it already!

If you go to the NNA website, I am sure they will have that information available.
There is no need to beat a dead horse.

I'm a member

But I can guarantee you that I will not comply with what they are doing. IMHO I'm a bit tired of this subject because I think everyone is jumping the gun here. I'm in California and all CA notaries know that we have already complied with the SOS requirements which goes throught the FBI and DOJ so I would prefer to wait and see what the STATE says before making any decission on my membership. BTW, I'm certified as well and some of you may think it means nothing but the fact that I have it means something to me and that is all that matters. Don't confuse "book smarts" with "street smarts"....I have both.

Re: I'm a member

Do you really want to know or is this a badger fest. I got the certification because I felt it would help me to better understand the process, not get more business above everyone else. All I'm saying is that just because I have a certification I don't think I'm better than anyone else who does not so why is it that those who don't have it want to downplay the fact that some of us do? Know what I mean? Looking back now, I can see that the certification doesn't give me anything more than anyone else just the satisfaction that I believe in myself and what I do. Face it, when you first started out in this business all you were was a Notary Public...not a Notary Signing Agent. To claim to be a Notary Signing Agent you would have had to do signings and I'm pretty sure that was not the case for anyone who first got commissioned. So, the certification part just gave me more confidence that I could go to a borrowers home and not seem like I was just a Notary but that I took the time to understand the documents and I know my client feel that from me when I enter their home to do a signing. Bottom line....the Notary Public test does not cover Loan Document Signing in depth like the certification does.

That's why most of us have become certified.
I didn't take that question to be badger, but curiosity, FWIW.
We all have our reasons.
IMO you did it for a good one: competancy.

Thank you, my response was not directed to you so sorry if you thought so. I actually liked your response to the originator of this message. Wait until we get some snow. Folks build snowmen and dye them green and gold. As a realtor I listed a house painted those colors and it did sell rather quickly. Also folks paint cars and fly packer flags on them.

Better get used to it.

Re: I'm a member

Actually, I was an escrow assistant, and doing closings before I got my notary commission. My EO didn't allow her assistants to be commissioned, because the notary fee was a huge part of her pay. I got my notary commission about 8 months after I started at that TC, and when I was promoted to EO a few months later, I already had my commission. By the time I became a fulltime NSA, I had already done thousands of closings in a 16 year period of time. So there are many NSA's out there, that have closing experience.

I made the mistake of becoming certified through the NNA, I had no idea they weren't the same NNA that I'd bought notary supplies from for several years in the 90's. It took me about 5 minutes to take the test, and it got me one decent company that paid decent fees. Every other call I've gotten from my profile there is a company that either doesn't pay, or low balls. I haven't gotten any calls from there in the last 9 months. So my NSA membership with the NNA was a complete and total waste of my money (my opinion and a fact). If the NNA really wanted to give NSA's responsible training, they'd alter their tests and booklet's to the applicable laws of each state. They don't do that. If I hadn't been an EO in CA for years, I may not have passed their test, as most of the questions were based on CA law. How can you properly train an NSA while giving them information that isn't pertinent to them?

BTW

I'm not sure when you took the test but it was definately not a 5 minute test. It is more like a 4-5 hour test (4 parts) so maybe you are thinking of another test from YEARS ago. And the test was more than just CA law...it is specific to the loan documents most commonly used today....that is a fact...not just MHO. Not to mention it cost about $160 for the course book and test combo. Of course someone with your "experience" would only need the test and not the course book. But, because I was still pretty new and had done about 50 signings I felt it would be a good idea to get the course book so I would know without a doubt what I was talking about when doing a signing....the test is open book BTW and I didn't want to be a "script monkey" and just look up the answers.

Re: BTW

My certification expires in January with the NNA. I did not buy the course book for the test. I didn't need a book, I knew the documents like the back of my hand. I learned the documents by reading them when I first started doing loan signings, there was no course book in 1990 anywhere. There wasn't time for the EO I assisted to explain them to me. I just read them, and read them, occasionally listened when another EO did a signing. That is how I learned the docs. As for the NNA test, I took the test at work, during a break, I was done in no time at all. The test had nothing at all that applied to NC loan signings, NOTHING. It was all CA, I remember thinking that if I hadn't been an EO in CA I would not know the answer to many of the questions.

The NNA gives blanket tests, and blanket answers to Notary and NSA questions. If they were really serious in helping you learn, then they would have state specific tests. You have no idea how many times I hear, well the NNA said to do this, and "this" is wrong in this state! If you wanted a decent cert program, the one at SR is far better than the one at the NNA. And that test takes less than 5 minutes!

Re: I'm a member

No, I wasn't just setting you up so I could be mean to you because of your answer. I was really curious as to why it means something to you since I view being certified as completely worthless.

The information you learn about loan signings during the process is of course useful (although as we all know from reading this board, there are a lot of certified signing agents that still don't know jack about doing loan signings), but the actual certification at the end of it is pretty meaningless IMO.

So another question for you, now that you're more experienced and know what you're doing when you go out on loan signings, will you renew your certification when it expires? If so, why?

Re: I'm a member Rebecca

The one point you seem to be missing is not everyone here started doing this because the NNA promised riches. Many members here have a background in the Legal, Title, Escrow, Mortgage and Real Estate fields. Many here did NOT come into this profession green. Many here possess credentials above and beyond any certification offered by the NNA or any other NSA association and do not feel the need to pay the NNA for a worthless, IMO, piece of paper. That is the point and that is a FACT.
