OT: Darn it all to heck
(I actually used much stronger words.)
Hard disk drive failure. It just had to be the main server data volume, of course. And, according to Murphy, it would fail at the most inopportune time, which it did. I was in the middle of a data backup as I prepare the new desktop system and website. Have been in data recovery mode for hours. Think I need to share the agony with my family, my Old Granddad and Jack Daniels are already here to help.
Sorry for the post, just had to vent a bit.

I hate that when it happens. At least you know what to do to correct it. I just end up buying a new computer.

Well, at least I learned one thing from the 20 years I spent in the "Sure Hate Information Techonology" department.

My hard drive....
died about a year ago. I thought my life was over, no back-up. It makes you learn alot about computers/operating systems real fast. I simply bought a new hard drive, cheap, easy to put in and after a few days of installing software life was great. Much better than with that old virus/spyware ladden sucker I use to have. I do miss those precious pictures of my grandkids that i'll never get back. I still don't back-up my files, once a fool, always a fool. If this happens to anyone out there I strongly recommend just a new hard drive. Computers are cheap now but hard drives are even cheaper and any fool can replace them.
Sorry for the bad luck PAW, Larry

" I still don't back-up my files, once a fool, always a fool." --------------------------------------------------------------- Well, Larry... I hope you do all your record keeping on paper and have it secured somewhere. I would be in deep doo-doo if I didn't backup by important files. It saved me when my hard drive crashed last year.
I have an external drive for backup,(Buffalo) and use the Buffalo backup utility to automatically back up my important files once a week. No effort on my part - have it set to backup every Sunday at 12AM.

I do have.....
plenty, in fact piles of paper records. I never look at them, I just keep them in case my hard drive fails! The real important stuff like kids photos and my music library, which took my hours and hours to build, are very vulnerable to a technology meltdown. My record player still works and I still have all my old lp's but I never use them. I've taken more family photos with my digital camra in the last three years than I have with film in the last twenty years. I'm just a power surge away from only being left with my kodak albums. I don't know why I cannot find time to put these things to disc.
Your right Barbara. It would take me days of sorting through papers to do my taxes should technology fail me.
always a fool, Larry

RAID is the answer
Read all about it here: http://compreviews.about.com/od/storage/l/aaRAIDPage1.htm
Not until few months ago did I learn the important of ultilizing what my computer is capable of when the HD crashed. Even with the availability of backup & data recovery, our famous wizard PAW still has to call upon uncle Jack to help ease the frustration.
HD's are cheap, I now have 4 (2 blocks at 250GB each) of them running in RAID1 along with a super-duper battery backup surge protector.

Yep, GeekSquad store (BestBuy) has the Maxtor 200Gb USB 2.0 external hard drives on sale for under $100. I remember when you couldn't touch a 20Mb hard drive for less than $100. If car values paralleled computer technology, you would be able to buy an Aston-Martin for that same $100.
