OT.. Locking yourself out of you car
Yea.. I'm sure we've all done THAT before. If you have the kind of lock/unlock button on your key chain, give the extra set to someone you know and trust. If you lock yourself out of your car, call them on your cell phone, put your cell home by the vehicles engine and have them press the unlock button. VIOLA!! Your vehicle is unlocked. Try it in your own driveway.. it works. (My bro-in-law who works in security didn't know THAT trick!)

I refuse to be an idiot and let anyone KNOW it. So I never lock my keys in the car. However, I have the local hardware store make a copy of the key and then take one of the bolts out of the license plate bracket and put that key there, behind the plate. I put a bolt back that has a slot big enough for a dime. You can almost always find a stranger who will loan you a dime!

I worry about this all the time. My car, on occaision, locks itself. No one can figure out why. It did it the other day after sitting in my driveway for about an hr. I heard the "beep" it makes and sure enough, it was locked! The keys were on the counter in the kitchen and I was at the computer.

Probably won't work unless
your remote is not of the RKE design (most are). Cell phones and the RKE's are on different frequencies. See here: http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/keyless.asp

Re: Probably won't work unless
I especially like this part:
(More than a few people have inadvertently fooled themselves into believing the cell phone method of unlocking car doors actually works because they tried it and achieved the desired results — not realizing their cars were still within range of their keyless remote devices, and the signals that unlocked the doors were transmitted the usual way [i.e., through the air], not via cellular phone connections.)

Y'all be quiet. I intend to believe what I want to
about this. I like it, so I am going to believe it. It won't help me with squat because while my dogs are very smart, they only help with the locks and windows while I am inside a store and they "paw" them inadvertently...often unlocking doors or lowering all the windows. (I lock them in while running inside the convenience store with the car/air running.)
However, my bro-law and sister have said they have done this while 20 miles apart and it worked. I was not there to witness it so I cannot attest to it. They have a Mercedes and a Ford truck. I do not know which one they claim it worked for.

Re: Y'all be quiet. I intend to believe what I want to
I should add that I only do this because I have two keys. One I leave in the car, and one I carry with me in my purse.

It actually happened when I was leaving the borrowers house. It was snowing outside and I got out to wipe snow off my car...... and when I went to get back in car,........ doors locked. I panicked because my cell phone was on the seat and my purse in the car. I had to go back into the borrowers house and ask to use their phone, he asked me was that a chrysler car. I said yes.. He said "mine too" he said sometimes this works let me try my key in your door. Oh my GOSH ... It opend my car door. I was like Dang.... thanks. He said Chrysler is known for that... I take my dogs to every signing in the winter months
I don't trust them at all so when I buy gas I put the key to the car in my pocket. I am pretty sure they know how to open the windows and I don't thinks its an accident when the windows close and the doors lock!!

Re:Ooops
I have done this too many times...mind on other things I guess. I've not only left the keys in the car...they've been IN the ignition....and the car is running!! Went into a store for 45 minutes once, and came back out to find my car running with doors locked. Talk about feeling stupid when you call AAA.
Some of you have said you leave a spare key in your purse...I do too...but it doesn't help when you also leave your purse in the car!
I haven't figured out a solution, other than to have a spare somewhere on the outside of the car as some have suggested. But have I done it yet? No, of course not! I'm waiting for it to happen again!
