OT - Passport Renewal
Anybody know the least expensive place to get a passport renewed? Online rates show about $49 plus $20 overnight fee plus $127 government fees total $196. I had no idea it was this expensive. The last time I got one it was $72!

I believe you can download and print the renewal forms online, then take them to the Post Office.

Call your local County Clerk's Office - see what they charge. I know if you are a member of AAA Insurance, they have some kind of passport program. Walgreens always advertises that they take passport pictures.
I know that our County newspaper had some info on the new ID laws for travel just recently -- I think if you are going to be flying (starting in January) you will need a passport.... like if you will be flying to Canada. But, if you are driving to Canada you don't need a passport.... it didn't make sense to me but that's what they said.

Many (not all) Post Offices offer passport services, and have the forms there. I have one in front of me that states the fees are $67 for the application and $30 USPS fee, total of $97 for an applicant over 16. There are substantial additional costs to expedite the application in less than 6-8 weeks, so get it before you need it.

I just did it at the city hall a few months ago. I was charged $67.00 for the Department of the State, and a $30.00 processing fee for the city. It took about 7 weeks to receive, but they did say that time could double closer to the end of the year due to the new law requirements. They offered pictures for $9.95 there, I had already got my at UPS for the same price.

When I renewed mine several years ago, I did it completely by mail. Looking at the State Department's web site (http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/renew/renew_833.html) it seems you can still do it by mail, and it only costs $67 plus whatever you pay to have the pictures taken.

They are correct about the 67.00 fee, plus photo costs. You will be sending in your old passport and if you want it returned you need to send a letter stating you wish it to be returned to you for memories sake or whatever reason... or else they destroy it for you. IN renewals you save the passport agents 30.00 fee. They advise 6 to 8 weeks to get it back.
