Order Official Background Checks from your State
If we all order our state's official background checks, there won't be all this fuss about the NNA.
Every state has a department that handles official background checks. In Massachusetts, it the Criminal History Systems Board and the check is called a CORI and the fee is $25.00.
Once you have your "official" background check, with your state's "official" seal on it, you can fax that to whatever company requests it.
Then all you have to do is request it every couple of years so that you have an updated background check to send out.
There is no company that can deny your own state's "official" background check. Quite frankly, the official state background check is worth more to companies than whatever the NNA comes up with.

Tina, Re: Order Official Background Checks from your State
Because all applicants for a California notary commission, must have a mandated background check, I bought this to the attention of a NNA supervisor last month. However he informed me, that the NNA's background check (supposedly) goes further than the state's requirements.

yeah, right. Maybe they do a 60 cent credit check. I don't know that, but it IS a question worth asking.

Lee, Re: Order Official Background Checks from your State
He claims that the background check completed via California's Secretary of State, is limited to the DMV and other "state only" records. Whereas, the NNA's includes verification via both the FBI and Justice Department.
I have tried telphoning the Secretary of State several times, but the lines tend to be constantly busy.

That is so much bull it stinks! They claim they do a better check than the state? I don't know if you recall when you went for your live scan, but I recall that mine went to the Dept of Justice as well as the FBI. I even asked the technician how long it takes for the check to come through and he stated that it depends on the work load at the FBI database. As I recall, most of the state issued licenses in CA require live scan checks and also call for FBI and DOJ checks. That NNA is just so full of it.

The record of your....
background check in California is only for your review for completeness and accuracy. Apparently it cannot be used to submit to a person or enity for the purpose of employment. California Penal Code 11125. Not sure if our background check includes criminal history in other states. They do say that other jurisdictions (FBI) are checked if requested by the requesting agency. I'm not sure that the background check that we had to become notaries is going to be very helpful here. E-mails to the SOS and Department of Justice searches have left me confused.
