Problem Updating My Profile
Okay, before I start pulling my hair out, maybe someone can tell me where I'm going wrong here.
I'm reading the forum regarding this "recorded" phone call that many received (including myself) so I figure I should try to update my profile.
I change CERTIFIED to Certified, and it won't let me save because I need to chose a security question and provide an answer.
Sooooooo. I chose a question and provide the answer. Now it won't let me update my profile because it says my Forums Alias is already in use and I need to chose another one. However, my forums alias is greyed out and I can't figure out how to change it. Furthermore, it wasn't "in use" when I chose it in the first place, so I'm figuring I'm the one actually using it and I don't really want to have to change it anyway. I like my forums alias.
This is the point where I want to pick up the phone and call technical support, but there really isn't any tech support to call.............
So I'm at my wit's end!!!! Anybody have any ideas as to how I can update my profile (preferably WITHOUT changing my Forums Alias) so that I won't get any more recorded phone calls when I'm driving 60 MPH on the freeway and I can't understand half of what is being said anyway?
(And while I'm on this soapbox, I would much prefer NOT to have my cell minutes wasted on a recording when an email would suffice and would probably convey a much clearer and more effective message.)
Anyway, I'd just be so thrilled if I did not have to spend life's few precious moments on this kind of minutia. So if anyone has any helpful ideas, I'd really appreciate it.
(And I was having such a grand Saturday on a brisk, clear, sunny afternoon. . . . .)

Log out - log back in - go to your profile and don't change anything - just hit Update..<<shrug>>

Re: How about..
Oh, thank you for the advice Linda, but I tried it and it doesn't work. I logged. Logged in. Clicked on my profile. Hit update and it asks me to chose a security question.
So clearly I'd be just headed down the same path.
Anybody else have any thoughts? Please, please, please?

I'm having a similar problem. If I go to my profile and just select "update" it states I need to provide a "security question and answer". When I do this, it then comes back with "Name is too complicated; please simplify. Enter the name as it would appear if someone were writing a check to you or your business." I've been using the same name for quite a while and don't want to change it!. Harry, why is this happening?

New guidelines for profiles
There are new guidelines for profiles, and some information is now unacceptable. These unacceptable profiles will be deleted anyway, so consider reading and adapting to them, and if that doesn't help, scroll down to the contact us link, and shoot Harry an email.

Harry's new guidelines
Notary Profile Naming Rules Posted by Harry [NR] of IA on 9/25/06 5:04pm Msg #48 This message has been cross-posted to the Notary Talk Discussion Forum as Msg # 148410.
Effective immediately, all profile names should meet the following rules:
1) Be in Proper Case, 2) Not contain special characters, 3) Not contain phone numbers, 4) Not contain extraneous spaces, and 5) Not contain superfluous information.
In other words, your profile name should generally match the name your clients write checks to. Here are some examples:
Acceptable Names ============================= Bob Smith Smith Mobile Notary Bob Smith, CSA
Unacceptable Names ============================= Bob Smith **** CALL ME AT 515-555-5555 **** Bob Smith and His Party of Seven Swinging Singing Signers BOB SMITH Bob Smith, NNA Certified Signing Agent * * * B O B - S M I T H * * * Best Notary * * * Go Bob! Bob Smith Serving all of Los Angeles!
In the coming weeks, we will be identifying all profiles not in compliance with the new naming convention and will either change them OR disable them.

Well that's the thing. I don't think there is anything in my profile that doesn't meet those requirements. Click on my link and see.

Name in a notary find
I think Harry means the way your name shows up on a notary find search results pg.
Try a few zip codes in So. Calif. You'll see offenders.
Yr profile's where you enter the name shows up in a search. That's why Harry wants us to correct profiles.
Yr name comes up fine in a notary search. I just plugged in your zip at "find a notary" tab page.

Re: Perhaps it's a web site programming problem since
Paul2_FL seems to be having similar issues. I don't understand why my Forums Alias would be problematic when I seem to be the only one using it. I just did a search on my alias and the only comments that come up are ones I've made.
It's kind of bizarre.

No. If you read my first message, it details what does happen. It keeps asking me to adjust this, that and the other thing without ever letting me successfully update. I get a little icon of a construction worker's "work horse" (those things you can lay boards across) and the writing is in orange.

I like the expression "put your daughter to better use." That's great. I also like your picture. It's darling.
I just got an email from Grif Shoemaker at Notary Rotary, so hopefully he'll be able to help me figure this out. If so, I'll post an update.

I agree w/your idea to notify us via email...
I was called during my grandson's soccer game and the call was dropped from my cell, so I have NO idea what was said - no message or call back. But I'll just hit "update" on my profile everyday until this is over.

If I remember correctly, under the new rules, the word "Certified" is not allowed to appear in your name. In most instances, it is a) Superfluous, and b) Unverifiable by us and the companies using our site. There is also an ongoing debate as to the true value of certifications.
Still, recognizing that many people have paid a great deal of money for their "certifications" and would like to exhibit this form of commitment to the profession on their profiles, we do allow for at least one acronym (such as CSA) AND you are always able to explain the significance of your certification(s) in your notary comments.
In case this is not clear, we do not want to see the following clutter in our search results:
Mary Jane Smith, 321 Certified Signing Agent and Certified Mobile Notary Public Mark Jerry Foley, MMA Certified Professional Maximus Marconius - Certified, Bonded, Insured
Provided you have entered a security question and security answer, you are probably not seeing that message. Rather, you are likely seeing a message that tells you your name does not conform to the new standards.
In response to your e-mail v. cell phone comment... Our system has been sending a very large number of e-mails for the past several days. Due to the volume and the type of request ("account update"), along with the number of bad e-mail addresses (thanks to people not keeping their information current), the e-mails are often either rejected as spam OR our entire connection is blocked. Many companies with large memberships have the same problem with mail providers like Yahoo!
Because of the HUGE number of messages being returned to us, we decided to augment our e-mail campaign with a voicemail campaign. Knowing that some people are very cheap and most people are busy, we made it a point to keep the message well under 30 seconds; you'll notice that Traci was talking relatively fast.
Our next course will be direct faxes - possibly only to those who have not updated - and, finally, direct mail. Depending on how many members we notify and in what ways, these campaigns will cost us up to $25,000. What was your cost for the 30 second message we left you? If you believe this expense to be burdensome, you may send us a copy of your cell phone bill requesting reimbursement.

I don't have a problem receiving phone calls, except the call was dropped and I heard nothing. But that's ok, I'm on top of the "update'.
Thanks for the detailed information.

Re: Certified was never in my name; it's only in my profile
and when I try to enter a security question and update, it tells me that "Forums Alias is already in use. Your changes have not been saved. Please correct this error and then resubmit."
However, my alias is greyed out and I can't change it, and more importantly, when I did a search, I could see that I'm the only one who has ever had that alias. I don't want to change my Forums Alias. I like it.
I have never seen an error message that is telling me that my name does not conform to the new standards. My name has always conformed to the new standards before you even articulated them. It is just my name. Nothing more. No caps. No advertising. Nothing but my first and last name. That's it.
With regard to the voicemail, it isn't helpful if it comes at an arbitrary time when it's hard to listen to it and when the voice is speaking so fast that you can't make out what's being said. I'm not the only one that couldn't understand that message. And there was no way for me to reaccess it or replay it because I answered the phone while I was driving. It didn't go into voicemail. And, unfortunately, I never received any email from Notary Rotary, and my email address has always been current. Why would I have an inaccurate email address on a registry for which I pay good money and from which I'm trying to attract new business?
So, PLEASE help me figure out why I can no longer update my profile. And please send me an email conveying whatever message you were trying to convey in that recorded message so that I can receive the same message as the others who got it.
I would so very much appreciate it.

A few months ago I had a problem updating, and it turned out I had a space or two after my last name. Try deleting your name and retype it being careful not to hit the space bar at the end.

Harry, I don't have "certified" in my name. What I have is my name and my business name. I receive checks both ways and therefore would like to keep it as it had been. Could you explain why this message keeps popping up: "Name is too complicated; please simplify. Enter the name as it would appear if someone were writing a check to you or your business." ???

I just used the initials of my business and it updated. This means that there must be a limit as to how many characters one can use. Is this correct??

Good Heavens Harry Shoemaker!!!
I would expect that it is YOU -you would make requierments here. PICK the words/Audio and blast us. We'll be okay with it......and let us know what you are looking for. Then, it's your job to caterogise them (those requirements)( We can't - it's not our system!) Pick what you think best. We trust you!!!
You need to spell it out. Clearly. same format for everyone. What you want. We'll do it.
It just bugs me that I think I wrote this exact same message serveral months ago. PICK WHAT YOU WANT!!!! WE WANT YOU!!!! AM I NOT CLEAR ON THIS!!!!!! LIKE THE ADVERTISEMENT SAYS.....JUST DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT HARRY. JUST DOOOOOOOOOO IT HARRY/TRACY.....JUST DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT.
I'M WITH YOU. JEEZ Wtf MORE DO YOU NEED? REALLY? iF i HAD THIS SORT OF BACKING? i'D BE OUT OF THE TITLE COMPANY IN AN HOUR WITH THE BRAIN SPINNING IN SO MANY DIRECTIONS. YOU'R SO DARN CAREFUL, its sort of annoying.
DIRECT FAXES MAY WORK - THE PHONE WORKED WELL AND i POSTED POSITIVELY ABOUT THAT.
DUDE: IF YOU WANT OUR GROUP HUG - WE HAVE IT FOR YOU. i DON'T THINK THIS SYSTEM IS ACCOMPLISING IT WELL. wERE DO THESE COMMENTS GO?
HARRY I LUV YA. i WANT YOU TO SUCCEED. TELL US HOW TO MAKE IT SUCCEED AND WE WILL DO SO. YOU KNOW THAT. Re: Good Heavens Harry Shoemaker!!!
Okay, I might have mildly over-reacted here. Just follow the intructions for the update of the profile being sensitive to what they are trying to eliminate (for the better of us, the signing services and the title company.
Consider the rest of my wailing to be on another topic entirely. Mea Culpa.
Pre-recorded messages are just smart and fast and do the job. Email can do the same; or faxes. Seems you wife has a 'sexy' voice, so if you can deal with that...no problem
too many instructions make me overreact, especially after a holiday party. I just made a new procedure for my weekend....after having a good time at a block party? Do not DO NOT log on to Notary Rotary.
And that's all I'm saying.

Dear Harry
I've gotten 2 emails back to back, heard the "sexy" recording twice (special me... ). Just not worth the $$$ over clueless, lazy, and hand me silver platter minds. For the record, Jeremy deleted my profile there due to the fact that I didn't update after a few email reminder attempts.
I like the new profile rules, but even with my 3 1/2 yrs old boy I only have to tell him one about everything. I know you care about us, just don't want you overworked over nonsense$.

Harry, I got the voicemail from Tracy and didn't notice that she was talking too fast at all. I must speak quickly on the phone as well since I thought it was a normal pace. I didn't receive the email, but I did update my profile today and I think it's an excellent idea to clean out the system since I've seen quite a few out of date profiles myself.
Thank you for taking the time to keep Not Rot running like a well-oiled machine. We appreciate having a forum that allows professionals to find one another.

Re: Changing Forums Alias
The Proper Case and Extraneous Space specifications apply to one's Profile Name, not the Forums Alias.
However, part of the problem is that I can't seem to change my forums alias in any case. My forum alias is greyed out and I can't see how to change it. As I've mentioned several times throughout this thread, the error message says, "Forums Alias is already in use. Your changes have not been saved. Please correct this error and resubmit."
I can't correct this error because the data field for forums alias is greyed out and I can't enter new data there. But more importantly if I do a search for FAN_IL the only comments that come up are mine. When I created the Forums Alias in the first place there was not conflict with another user, and I strongly suspect that there is no other user but me.
I changed my login name a while back and I would not be surprised if this is a technical glitch that needs to be addressed at the database level. But since no one from the web site has yet addressed the technical issues, I'm still waiting for this to be resolved.
