Re: Every pull on that credit report is just another "ding" on

I really don't quite understand why they think they need to know OUR credit. We don't owe anybody involved in what we do money. We don't handle money. THEY owe US. So...????
Yes, I've heard the 'excuses', but that's all they are...excuses. No reasons.

It's a form of exercising control over the notaries...

A lot of what the SS do is attempting to exercise control becasue many notaries are incapable of realizing that with out the notaries the SS do not have a business. Its about time that notaries exercised the control that they actually have and stop giving the store away!

I got their POS Newsletter today and...

just rolled my eyes when I saw the headline. "Strengthened NSA Certification Program Meets Federal Mandate, Protects Public." Federal Mandate??

"...the lending and title services industries are now requiring special background screening for all persons involved in the mortgage lending process, including Notaries.

Seeking a trustworthy entity to set up a uniform nationwide program for screening Notaries......the nation's leading title and mortgage document firms have called upon the NNA to develop a strengthened certification solution for Notaries..."

IMO, should read:

We ran out of revenue streams so we interpreted GLBA and found a way to line our pockets again. We lobbied the nation's leading title and mortgage companies to convince them this would be good for them and we are the ONLY organization that can mislead Notaries so successfully. Just look at our track record.

Again, this is just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

That's their story and they're sticking to it

I got the notice yesterday too. The letter that Charm described on the front of the envelope made me I so mad I could spit nails. Well, I called the NNA and just got off the phone after a 15 minutes triade with what was a very persistent phone rep at the NNA. He was adament - background checks are NOW REQUIRED by ALL lenders to comply with federal mandates of the GLBA. And in response to my question he answered: "These companies are only going to work with NNA certified, background-checked notaries. To become a NNA certified, background-checked notary yes, you have pay to become a NNA member, you have to pay to join the NSA section, you have to pay to take the NNA certification test, and pay for the NNA background check.

Nevermind that everything I have heard here and elsewhere is that only a very few entities are requiring background checks (per the NNA notaries HAVE TO submit to a check.) Nevermind that notaries aren't the only ones with access to that information (per the NNA notaries HAVE TO submit to a check.) Nevermind that NSAs are independent contractors and not employees. (per the NNA notaries "while you are working for that lending institution you are an employee of that institution" and HAVE TO submit to a check.) Sorry NNA, the IRS guidelines on what is and isn't an independent contractor is in my court on that one.

To the NNA: Nevermind. I think I will take my membership, section, and certification dollars elsewhere.
