Techie Equipment question

I would have used the search button but I don't know the name of the item I am asking about.

Someone told me there is a "usb type cord" that plugs in to your laptop and the other end into your cellphone to gain access to the internet. Supposedly, it uses the signal from your cellphone and doesn't actually call (like dial up) This person works in real estate and a colleague uses this system at open houses to pull up other homes online that prospective clients might be interested in.

Does anyone know anything about or what it is called? TIA for assistance.

Re: Techie Equipment question I use a cell phone data card

for my laptop. It used to be that you cold hook into your cell and use it as a modem and I understand that you still can but it is slow and messy. I think it is Verizon that has a deal right now for a broadband data card for $50 a month and maybe the cost of the card which isn't a lot. The other thing is Bluetooth, I use it with my cell - PDA - Laptop for contact management. With Bluetooth I can cause my cell to dial any number right out of my PDA or computer. I hope that helps. the data card is really cool and I use mine all the time when I am out of the office, no more crappy charges at Starbucks or looking for a hot spot. The data card is certainly one of my favorite accessories and all the major cell companies offer them you just need to shop around for the best deal. Make sure you ask around because some cell companies have a better presence in some areas. In my very rural area Verizon is the best.
