Valid forms of ID
I just got (for the first time) a loan doc that requires 2 forms of ID.
I have searched with the big yella button, but could not find what are considered as forms of ID.
I am in the state of CA, and I know what the "primary forms" of ID are, but, alas, I have forgotten the secondary forms. Can any body provide me with a list?
Thanks! Bruce

Bruce, you are not going to like ANY of the responses!
You must not do any loan closings until you know your Notary laws and rules COLD! Such a basic question should never be asked by anyone contemplating loan signings.

Check on the SOS site.
I am being nice. Passports are acceptable forms of ID. Along with Military ID

That sounds like a lender requirement
The lender may already have a list on the closing instructions or on your confirmation. These vary by lender, so you may want to check with the hiring party, or look on the ID verification form in the package to see what they consider secondary ID. It could be anything, like SS card, utility bill, etc. but it would not be in your best interest to check with me: the lender's requirement is what matters.

may be the Patriot Act, it does list what is acceptable.
as mentioned in the above thread, look over the pckg. should list what is acceptable, again lender requirement not for your certificates or journal...but you knew that.

Bruce, Just check with the SS they can generally tell you.
First ID from the SOS Notary handbook
Generally it is for the 2nd ID
Current government-issued visa; Medicare card; studen identification; voter registration car;, recent property tax or utility bill; most recent W-2 or signed federal or state tax returns;, bank statments; and proof of ca/house/renter's insurance coverage.
Hope this helps It can be anything the lender accepts.

No, no, NO!
It CAN NOT be "anything the lender accepts."! We must comply with the LAW IN OUR STATE! Hello? We must ID the signer(s) according to established Notary Public rules and laws, not just what the lender / title company / broker / signing service thinks is OK.

Re: No, no, NO!...Ernest, unless I read the post wrong
I think he's referring to the Identification Verification Form some lenders provide and on which they request two forms of ID be listed -
As notaries we only need one form of ID to identify for the notarizationand that IS according to our state's laws, but Identification Verification form as requested by the Lender requires two forms of ID - and the form even lists what forms are acceptable. This is generated by the lender.

You REALLY should already know this but... 1st form of ID should always be a driver's licence or passport (valid of course). 2nd form can be passport, ss card or birth certificate - anything else you need to check the laws in your state.

Ernest
the loan docs require 2 ID's not the state. Once CA notarial requirements have been met, the lender may request an additional ID. This is why I suggested what I did. Unless a CA notary shows us that 2 ID's are required for notarizing in that state.

Bruce, as you already indicate, you know how to ID someone for notary work.
The second ID is b/c the lender wants it.
For these types, I have used
SS Card Voter Registration Card Medicare Utility bills Marriage License Birth Certificate
I have used them, but it depends on what the lender will accept.
