Would like an opinion on this scenario...
First, I will mention that I moved to my current location about 3 months ago (100 miles from previous home), so I am not familiar, yet, will all the little towns around where I live.
I got a call yesterday, while in my car, for a signing in a little town that I hadn't heard of yet. Normally, I ask the ss to mapquest it for me, but instead, she told me it was near Rossville (about 15 miles). Ok, cool - I know where that is, so I quote her a fee and she accepts. When I get the confirmation and do a mapquest on the address, I realize she must have said Rockville, not Rossville...which is closer to 60 miles. I email her with the mix-up and ask if there is anything she can do. She says she can only go up $5 or she will have to look for another notary. She also said it was a small package (overnight), so it wouldn't take me long. There is not much profit in this one for me, but I messed up, so I am going to deal with my mistake, learn from it and go on. Today, I receive a call from the lender. He has messed up the TIL, mortgage & HUD and could I print and replace in the package. This equals about 20 pages (40 total with the borrowers). Would you go back to the ss and ask for more money? Or just do it and think about how nice the weather is and how pretty the trees are, etc...haha. Just curious.

Your call. Go & call it a learning experience or call 'em back & quote your fee & let 'em find a closer Notary. (They may not, ya' know.) But, the first thing I would do is map everything and get a handle on the time & mileage situation so that you don't get caught again. Melissa Data (google it) has an excellent "All towns in a county by zip code" list. Excellent starting point.

I would have called and confirmed what town she said it was near and adjusted or declined if she was wrong. Many times a company will tell me how far away someone is, however, that's as the crow flies. Nothing to do with the time and distance traveled. Since you have decided to take the job after all, just print and think about what you want to be for Halloween.

If it's your mistake you fix it for free. If it's their mistake, they need to pay you to go back out and fix it.
Call the SS, tell them what happened, quote them a fee to go out and fix it, let them decide whether they want to accept it or not.

Re:Robin I would go ahead and do it, I also would have
informed scheduler that you misunderstood the city name (as I see you did), I would have accepted the 5 dollar increase she offered, I would have also called back with the new info you got regarding "could you print" ask for increase again. If they say no you either accept and don't accept, I'd accept and more so if this is a new caller to you in the area you just moved into. By asking for more money you are indeed making them aware of the extra issues that arose, you are going to go ahead and do it, in my mind shows your a good egg to move with the flow. This all sets the foreground for future situations with this company as well as establishing a relationship with them. Sometimes we must cut our losses and Cali once mention 'things all even out in the end" sometimes they really do, such as quickie a block away from home and less docs then you expected when you printed and so on and so on.
