"Revised" Email from Nations Direct (Long)
Dear Valued Agent,
Recently, we sent an email to you about the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA). An act intended to protect consumer's personal and private info rmation.
Recently the NNA with backing from several of the nations largest title insurance underwriters announced a GLBA certification program for signing agents.
Our previous email stated that this was a "requirement" as of December 1, 2006. To properly word this statement it needs to be revised to say that the GLBA certification program will be a "requirement" for some of our client base as of December 1, 2006.? In other words, we will have a portion of our business within Nations Direct that will only be available to those signing agents that are GLBA compliant.
In the upcoming days, we will give you as much info rmation as we can on this subject.
Thank you again for your continued support.
Heather Walters

Looking forward to their updates. I love the phrase GLBA compliant.

I am Licensed by the State of Maryland and commissioned as a notary. I am not going to bow down to nickel and dime signing services. It's the attorneys that I work with that matter to me.
Who decided that the NNA was the "end all be all".

Just to clarify, I did not say the NNA was the end all be all, or that anyone should work for the low fees that Nations offers. I was merely posting the revised email as this was being discussed yesterday when the original email was sent out. If I misunderstood your post, I apologize.

Re: to cassiewi
I never, ever said that you said that. I was stating my opinion. I haven't had one title co or attorney call and ask me for a bgc.

Re: to cassiewi
I wasn't sure if you were talking to me or not, that's why I posted if I misunderstood, then I apologize. Only nations direct has contacted me and I really don't mind if they never call me again.

The NNA is the only entity that thinks they are the end all be all. Please see Msg #153239 below.

Nations Direct and NNA !
"Birds of a feather flock together." I would suggest everyone "think" for yourselves and not let the "birds" intimidate you. NNA; in business to make money, preferably our money. Nations Direct; Low ball company. I wouldn't work for them on a bet. A stroll down memory lane. Remember when Nations Direct used place full-page ads in the NNA magazine? Then our fees (according to NNA) should start at $50. A little hand-holding going on there ? Hummm Take a "wait-see attitude." Personally I have not received word-one regarding backgrond checks from anyone or from the state of Colorado.
This is just my opinion.

Re: Nations Direct and NNA !
I've had one company I do business with do a background check on me, they asked my permission, I gave it, they paid. I'm also a ER Broker, so I had to re-do my FBI, and CBI fingerprint/ backgroung check this year (A CO REC requirement) I paid.
My only concern is all this fuss stired up by the NNA in an attempt to make more money could have some fallout. What happens IF some LENDERS start asking Title Co's if their Notaries have had BGC's?? The Title Co'c shouldn't care as we are 'independent contracters' and not their employees. BUT if the LENDERS get ahold of this, and make it a requirement to get their business, the Title Co's will have no choice. I know of one title company here in Denver that does business nationwide, and has thousands on Notaries in their database. They are NOT going to pay over a hundred grand to get all the notaries they use BGC's. I looks to me like WE all will eventually have to pay for BGC's if the NNA keeps pressing for it.

Re: Nations Direct and NNA !
Michigan did a CBC on me when I renewed my commission. If that's good enough for the state, it should be good enough for the lenders. If push comes to shove, I'll go to the State Police and have them run a check on me.

Did you see Harry's post further down? I think this is
another tempest in a teapot started by Chicken Little (NNA) to attempt a stampede to become NNA members and Signing Agents and for the Background Check. I suspect that the NNA has been loosing membership lately and needed a boost. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Re: Nations Direct and NNA !
MI doesn't do background checks as a standard protocol - some counties do, some don't, some do them sometimes /sometimes not. Statutes only state that the counties "may" do them. That lack of standard protocol - both statewide, and nationally - are at the root of the issue.
