Barbara, you're in NH so I can't comment on that practice. I do know that here in CA there are Agents that write the Title Policy and carry the docs to the Recorder to record.

Those that do are called "title agents" and there are some strict requirements. Not everyone can be a title agent complete with the right to record the docs in a transaction. Check your client base - what do they require? Who are your clients? Will they hire you and are you able to be a Title Agent? These are all questions the precede what you posted about.

You mean to tell me that in CA, only "title agents" can walk into the mighty register of deeds office and record?

When I worked there anyone could bring them in so long as they met the state's recording requirements and they paid the fee. Docs came via the US Mail, Fed Ex, UPS, title companies and the general public. Hundreds of mortgage assignments and mortgage discharges showed up via the mail. I could send my kids to the recorders office and they would have to accept the docs.

I have to think I am misunderstanding your post.

If not, even though everyone is leaving Michigan's sagging economic problem and depressed housing market, I am still thankful I don't have CA over-the-top laws.

Does the recorder ask to see the license before they record?

Wondering the same thing, Julie

Must be misunderstanding the post, too, because I find that hard to believe...only Title Agents can record a doc? Say it ain't so.

Re: Wondering the same thing, Julie

Unless there has been some recent change, anyone can take a document to the recorder's office. I have done it several times for companies that needed the DOT recorded the same same day as the signing. I am not a title agent, nor was I asked any questions. I just walked in, gave them the docs and my money, and PRESTO the DOT was recorded. Got my receipt and left, quite easy, except for the line Smile .

Re: Wondering the same thing, Julie

That's been my experience too Jon. What Title Gal said was "******there are Agents that write the Title Policy and carry the docs to the Recorder to record."
I believe the key words are "write the policy" and in conjunction with that they record the deed, dot, etc. I recorded documents myself and I'm not a title agent.
