F****** People...

I just love people. Especially the one who stole my laptop out of my car, and decided to take my newly purchased ASN soft briefcase, along with the new manual/binder I purchased from this here website, not to mention my embosser was in the bag, along with my return address stamp.

All stolen, right out of the front seat of my car, right in front of my condo....

Damn I love people....

Not only to steal your things, but also your way to replace them. I do believe people eventually get "back" what they do undo others, so here's hoping they get it soon! Frown

Wow! That hurts!

This sounds like a silly question, but I'm serious: Did you contact the police immediately?

Obviously you've got to get a replacement embosser, AFTER telling the agency that commissions Notaries Public in your state. Somebody could begin a business doing fraudulant notarizations....

Will your insurance company be of any help?

You have our sympathy!

Your post has had a positive effect on me...

as I will be having a new alarm installed this week to protect my investment.

As for the jackbag that stole your things, I am hoping Karma comes to kick their a** in short order.

Wow, I feel ya. I had left my laptop and briefcase in my car and one evening my car alarm went off and now I take everything inside with me when I get home. If I am out on the road, I keep my stuff in my trunk. Sorry for your mishap.

One 4th of July I went with my son to a family gathering in Houston at a loft apartment building across from Minute Maid Park.

While we watched the fireworks from the roof a theif broke into his truck and tried to steal the truck. Failing that, they took my laptop bag...sans the laptop...had used my bag that day to transport my crochet thread, half an afghan and needles.

I can sympathize with you 9-05 my laptop, bag, journal, embosser, and copies of my TPL, commission and E&O papers was taken from my truck in front of my house on a quiet street, and I had a signing the next evening. I contacted the police immediately and filed a report, then called the insurance commission and the SOS. Then called the signing company but luckily it was O/N docs and I had an extra journal and Seal.
My homeowners covered art of the replacement costs but it took forever to replace the personal stuff from the computer. The police never found out who took them.

... I'm sorry Brenda... and I know there's a lot of labor and love in an afgahn... but I'm imagining a junkie hoping for a quick selling laptop when he opened your bag.

I'm sure you've got a suggestion for what he can do with the knitting needles... but there's nothing at all to do with the yarn.

Serves the SOB right. It'd be even sweeter if he got busted... for some yarn.

Hate to say it, but some things are too tempting for people. I wouldn't trust that someone would respect my property right in front of my own home, especially when it looks like an easy mark. Sorry for your loss, hope you can recoup it soon.

Sorry to hear this. I bought a program for my son's laptop when he went to college. Its called LoJack. Install, register on their website. Everytime you get on the internet it contacts a monitoring center. If stolen, you file a police report and notify LoJack recovery team. The monitoring center will be able to track it down as soon as it connects to the internet. Never had to use it yet, thank goodness, but find comfort in knowing that it will be possible to get it back. There is nothing guaranteed, but it is worth a try. I paid $29 for it. Have to renew it every year too. Small price to pay for some peace of mind for everything you can lose in a laptop. Good Luck and hopefully you'll get it back.

Re: F****** People...---LJ

I have LoJack installed/registered on all my vehicles, but didn't know it was available for things like a laptop. I love the lojack system, and the best part is thieves have no clue that it's even equipped with that. There are no stickers saying this car is protected by .... and it's installed in a different place on each of my vehicles, so it would take more time than a thief would want to take, looking for a securuty system. Think I'll take a look at the website for info on using that for my laptop!

laptop should be delivered within days. What is the name of the program if you don't mind?

We moved to Lake Arrowhead of course for the beauty but also the low crime rate, there is crime here but nothing like the crime from where we moved from. I recently went to SC to visit son and his wife, even though he lives in what looks like a nice neigborhood, I noticed he sets the house alarm before going to bed every night, he often looked out the window in the evening to look at his vehicle.

Since we moved to Lake Arrowhead, I don't recall ever locking our cars, we leave cells and laptops in the car, if running to the market we seldom lock the house. My neighbor has lived here over 25 years and also seldom locks her home or car. I go down the mountain to work and I lock everything 24-7.

Last year, there was a spree in my neighborhood

we weren't affected, but my neighbor's car was broken into inside their garage. The theives broke into the garage & smashed the window on his locked car to gain access. Stole some CD's, etc. Because they were in the garage, they used his tools to break into the car & no one saw a thing. Our vehicles were at the rear of our house, we have motion lights & always lock our vehicles.

If someone wants to get in badly enough, they will. We will at least make them work for it -- not leave things unlocked. Everything goes into the trunk -- at least that way they can't see what's in the car that might be worth anything. I always bring my bag into the house with me.

I'm always amazed at how many borrowers have to go to their car to get their ID when they're home. Purses & wallets left in the car as a habit...it's mindblowing.

takes our stuff. I'm sorry for your loss, the pain in the a??, cost and time all of this will take to replace. I have a spare briefcase in excellent condition I would be happy to place in the mail to you. Did they get your notary seal, I noticed you mentioned notary embosser I'm assuming you will have to replace all anyway of course.
I took it upon myself to order a spare certificate of authorzation to manufacture a notary seal, sometime ago. A fellow notary was down the mountain and she had her briefcase in the car, and yes someone stole it all, so of course she lost business until she could replace it.

Perhaps if fellow notaries could donate the smallest amount to assist you in getting back in business as soon as possible, this could eliminate some of your loss.
I'm certainly willing to contribute, for many notaries I know this is their only income and being as unpredictable as this business is, every penny counts.
Let me know if you want the spare briefcase it can go out in tomorrow's mail, also I can photograph it, if you'd ike to see a pic before I send. It might at least get you by for a while, even if not your style.

Andrew ...

A marine? Come on, you were running with scissors and you got cut. If you think about it for about 2 minutes, you can come up with a LONG list of worse things that could happen to a person than this. This is something you can fix by throwing money at it - if only all our problems could be so easily solved. I have a few I'd trade you for, and most likely everyone does.

I hate to sound ... well, the way I must be sounding, but the language used (asterisks or not) just didn't hit me as very appropriate from someone such as yourself, on a public forum, for such an event.

Hmmmmm...

The board may fry me in oil but I NEVER leave anything in my car, period. I don't even stop at the market after a signing and leave my briefcase in the car. My business is either always at my fingertips OR locked in my home per State Regs. I agree that it's a pretty screwy world that won't allow you to lock something up in your car and then you could consider it safe. This is a reality check, your journal, seal and embosser should be either in your possession or locked in your home. People steal cars, awful tough to pick up a house and run away with it.

Lol! I'm just one person, and they've taken ...

...the plants off my porch, my car, MY DOG and THEN actually extracted a ransom for her ... yep, leaving a laptop or a Snickers bar on the front seat of a car is just looking for a bad day. It's not the human race in it's entirety, mostly the human race has an okay set of checks and balances.

Cripe - I remember when my car was stolen, it took me 20 minutes just to realize I didn't FORGET WHERE I PUT IT!. It's a feeling, to be sure. It's so violating, I can certainly empathize. But ... like I said, in the scope of what can happen to a person in a day, in a heartbeat ... this is definitely on the list of things that I'll take over a lot of other things.

to always expect the unexpected. I am very careful with my briefcase, always taking it into the house with me, however there have been a couple of times when passing one of those magnetic malls, I have left it in the car. I carry a blankey with me to cover it, but even that is taking a chance. Thanks for the posts.

Re: magnetic malls?

Hey Misty! Surely you have experienced the magnetic mall phenomenon. In between appts or finished for the day and you happen to come up upon a mall...and something unrelenting takes control of your steering wheel. The next thing you know, you're walking in the doors of your favorite anchor store. Magnetic malls' goals are to strip you of any (spending) self discipline you've worked hard to achieve. Staying on backroads usually helps defend against MM's.

Re: magnetic malls?

LOL, Elaine! That explains the magnetic mall.
I am in such a rural area it is a rarity to drive by a mall.
Usually I am hell-bent on getting to an appt. on time when I do, so the magnetic
properties must be dissuaded.

I am really sorry to hear about your plight. It brought back a nightmare....once I had a briefcase with notes for a deposition I was going to take stolen out of my car, parked in back of my house. Luckily the case settled within days of the theft, but I did suffer quite a bit of heartburn in the interim.

Now, I leave everything locked in the truck of my car if I must leave it the car at all. Yes, thieves can still take the car with all of the stuff, but those more common small-time , grab go thieves will be have less reason to invade. Since I have been burglarized several times (not recently, thank goodness), I am cynical enough to feel that no places is truly safe, only safer.

Like others have noted, redundancy is the key. Have duplicates of stamp, journal, etc and your car (and its contents) is insured. And, if you must park your car ungaraged in front of home, you might consider installing a video tape security system (they are quite inexpensive now) and while it won't prevent further thefts, it can at least increase the chances of having the culprit arrested.
