Re: OT-Sad or funny? Both? You decide.. This would be funny...

if it weren't so pathetic. No wonder there are threads asking for more government control of lending, business, personal life, etc. etc. etc. It's sad that so many people are so stupid they need their thinking done for them. I won't even go into politics and the resulting mess that we see everyday on television. And we know what's best for the world???? Lord help us please, we need it!

They may not know those basic questions

but I bet every one of them can tell you who the contestants are for American Idol or who won the last Survivor series! I wonder how much tape was on the cutting room floor. Surely these weren't randam street samplings, but edited to only include the most obviously stupid!

On Presidents' day, I asked people what holiday it was. Many were confused. One girl in Kinko's (the one who signs for my packages), it went like this:

"What holiday is it today?"
"I don't know"
"It's Presidents' Day. What Presidents are we celebrating?"
"I don't know. All of them?"
"Washington and Lincoln. Do you know what they did?"
"No".
"Are you from around here? Did you go do school here?"
"Yeah, but I didn't pay attention to every little thing."

Then an old man came in. I asked him who Washington and Lincoln were. He said, "Washington was the General in the Revolutionary War before becoming our first President, and Lincoln emacipated the slaves."

I was so proud of him for that articulate answer. I think a lot of people forget about Washington being a General, and most people don't know the word "emancipated".

**On Presidents' day, I asked people what holiday it was. Many were confused. **

Surely I am reading this wrong...just confused and curious...why did you question people about things that might make them feel ignorant if they did not know the answer to? (They weren't asking to get involved in that discussion...you were engaging them into it while they were just trying to get business taken care of)

Did you want to make them feel stupid?

Give us some context here...otherwise, you sound like a trvia bully to me.

Trivia Bully

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a trivia bully. The people at Kinko's and I always chat, so we are friends. (One time I reached in for my mail, and she grabbed my hand from the other side to scare me, and I screamed, (she laughed) so it goes both ways).

The workers at Kinkos were kevetching about having to work on a holiday. I figured if we (others) are getting a day off, we should know why. Washington and Lincoln were PROFOUNDLY infuential on our American History. I think they are worth thinking about on their birthdays.

I love history, and I am very patriotic, and I don't think Washington and Lincoln are "trivia". I felt bad when she didn't know the answers, so I figured she wasn't raised in America. (I don't know who the first President of Mexico is, so maybe that was it.) But when she said she was born and raised here, I could not understand that.

So why is the guy on YouTube with a microphone okay, but I am a trivia bully? Well, I understand, everyone has a different opinion.

(I thought of asking my Kinko friends what Easter was about, but I really was afraid they might not know.)

P.S. I also buy these people candy, and donuts regulary, and I give them $25 a piece for Christmas becuase I rely on them so much to take good care of my packages. I also write letters to their boss praising them so they get whatever kudos Kinkos gives them.

Re: Trivia Bully

"So why is the guy on YouTube with a microphone okay"

CJ - all ya had to say is that you were more than acquaintances with these folks. It sounded like you went in and dropped the package and interrogated them about the holiday...um...like a trivia bully would.

I was drawing on my experience based on your description.

Don't you know people who'll just jump you when you are really busy and demand you answer an obscure trivial question they are really well versed on? I do, and I just want to say, "Say there, you condescending snot, move along and let me be...go prank with a triva expert and don't waste my time."

Hey, if you guys are friends then they probably enjoy your pop quizzing and banter.

Oh yeah...clearly the guy on YouTube was a CNN reporter and people WANTED to get into that interview or they would not have been captured in the segment. Behind the Kinko's counter you are pretty much forced to smile and tolerate the customer's "stuff." That's why I asked.

PS - I think it is sad that these folks didn't know the answers to historical questions but to each their own. I suspect they have knowledge I am certainly not an expert in either.
