OT - Train trips in Canada

Have any of you taken a train trip in Canada? I know there are several but some are very expensive. I'm looking mainly in Western Canada.

I wish I could help but I have never taken a train trip. In fact I am planning to take my first one in a couple of weeks. I am taking the train from Los Angeles to New Orleans. I'm really looking forward to it. Has anyone taken bicycles on a train (for that matter any public transportation long term) I was wondering if I needed to get those fiberglass bike cases or do they have a baggage car that will accept the bikes as is. My daughter and I plan on biking around since New Orleans is a small city (at least the French Quarter) and I figured it would be nice to bicuycle the levees. I'm staying in the middle fo the French Quarter and the hotel has no parking so I figured that a car would be a major liability.

My wife took a train trip to Indiana and had a great time. I don't know about the bikes but you can get info from the train station or by calling. Sounds great, have a good time.
By the way, when I was in New Orleans, they said don't go past a certain place in the French Quarter because it is dangerous. Have a safe trip.

Re: OT - Yes, Thank you, I've also heard that New Orleans

can be a very bad place to be if you wander out of the tourist areas. I appreciate the warning its been a very very long time since I been there and I hear that after Katrina things have degraded.

I will Beverly but I suspect that I am going to be pretty tied down to the local area. Since I am staying in the French Quarter and I am planning on using public transportation I am not planning on renting a car for this trip. Its going to be New Orleans only. Laissez les bontemps roulez!

I went from WI to WA years ago. I was young so sleeping in the seats didn't bother me. I did wake up to a porter leaning over me. I asked him "where am I?" and he said "Where do you want to be?" Very spooky up there all alone in the dome car. Scared the heck out of me! Ran back down to the regular car where there were more people!
I was disappointed in that we went through the mountains at night. That was why I was in the dome car...trying to see something after the flatlands of the Dakotas.

Re: OT Charles...

If I recall correctly, my brother in law took his bike on the train, and it had to be in a box. It struck me funny because I believe the handlebars were sticking out of the box. I'm not positive, but I believe that you can purchase the box (cardboard) right at the train station. They were very helpful but...
