I think that this is a question for you to discuss with an insurance carrier.

I think your first hurdle will be the CA background check. If I remember correctly you have to disclose any convictions on the Notary application. A call to the SOS Notary division may get you an answer or they may require that you fill out the app. and then run the live scan & background check when you pass the test.

Moral Turpitude
Moral turpitude is anything done knowingly contrary to justice, honesty or good morals. These crimes most often involve theft, fraud, deception and the like, although almost any crime can be one reflecting your moral turpitude (lack of good moral character).
In California, you are required to disclose on your application any arrests for which trial is pending and all convictions. Here's a link to the Secretary of State's page that lists the crimes that won't allow you to become a notary. http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/notary/notary_qualifications_revised.htm
See if you are qualified to become a notary first. Then worry about getting a bond - you can probably find an insurer, but you'll most likely pay a lot more.

Seems to me this site sells bonds/insurance in CA. Why don't you apply and see.

I doubt you will get a commision
Here is a link to the Secretay of State. You can download the handbook from the left hand margin if you have Adobe reader. It does say on page 29 in the Government Code 8214 that the SOS may refuse to appoint any person for conviction of a felony. Section B... Best of luck, but it doesn't look good... http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/notary/notary.htm

Exactly Beverly - I thought it was pretty crazy for a
notary to call themselves "factorfiction."

I struggled with the name
But in CA, it costs forty bucks for the test, thirty five for the live scan, plust the costs from a private co for the primer class. I hate to see somebody spend a bunch of cash, if there is little or no chance of success:-)

I'll give Ms. April the benefit of the doubt.
She did say she's not a notary yet, so she could have set up any old whatzis for a login handle. Either way, no harm, no foul.

I think the worst is that she may get her commission by a small margin but no title co. is going to want to sign with her. waste of money unless she wants to work for free.
