CCleaner issue

I've got an SOS out to Andy, but thought I'd ask here, in case anyone else knows!

My computer won't allow me to download ccleaner; it says it's an "unknown publisher." I tried to find where I change the settings to allow it to download, but haven't found them.

My computer des-per-ate-ly needs a tune-up. Help!

Its been my experience that the "unknown publisher" warning is a warning only and at the bottom of the box is a button to proceed regardless. I am a bit sick and tired of all the warnings. I use CCleaner and got the same warning and downloaded it anyway. Just because a software publisher did not pay to get a Microsoft "Certificate" is really no reason not to use the software. Like the NNA Microsoft is trying to hold on to the PC platform at all costs. Good luck.

Like Charles said, it should be just a warning. Some possible reasons you might not be able to run it are:

1. You work for a corporation that has "locked down" your computer

2. You are using Windows Vista; most of us have not switched yet, and have only heard rumors about how strict it is

3. You have installed an antivirus/antispyware product that is stricter than what the rest of us use.

Thank you, Charles. In this case, I get a message saying it is an unknown publisher and and "ok" button: no option to download anyway. Argh.

Usually when you get that message there's a couple of buttons that allow you to either accept the download anyway or cancel.

Read the message carefully and look at your available options - "unknown publisher" just means that the company didn't register their software with Micro$oft. If you got the URL from a trusted source (and Andy certainly qualifies as such), you can ignore that warning.

Thanks, Gerry & MikeC,

I'm running Avast antivirus, and as I stated to Charles, I'm not given the option of downloading anyway. HELP! So aggravating! (how do I make the grouchy emoticon here?!)

Re: CCleaner issue ~ I didn't read fa enough, can you

suspend the firewall/anti-virus and then download. I am currently running IE 7 and it is a real PITA, it wats permission for everything. I changed because on of my pirmary dashboards required it. I run Zone Alarm and when I click on the bottom tray I have the option of turning it off. I trust my title companies and I have to turn off Zone Alarm for all of them, it makes me a bit uneasy because I am afraid that someone might sneak in. I'm wireless in all my offices and I am running a secure modem which seems to be transparent so far but has an excellent firewall and anti-virus. The trusted zone area of IE 7 still has all kinds of warnings. The one I hate is when I try to load another page from an open page I get several warnings regarding the website tring to change web pages. I don't know if you toalk to your computer but it seems to help me get through all the new crap: I am not sat all sure if we are actually getting better service anymore.

Nope. Didn't work. Message says "Internet Explorer has

found a problem, blah blah blah, unknown publisher, etc., only option is to click "ok."

(I turned off the antivirus program, as you suggested.)

Thanks for your suggestions; you wouldn't think it would be this hard.

As a last resort did you try Tech Support at CCleaner? n/m

I haven't. I'll check that out. I was trying to "run"

before; I tried "save" instead, and it did save to my hard drive, but when I clicked on the program to run it, it stated "NSIS Error, corrupted or incomplete due to a damaged disk, failed download or virus."

cobwebs and makes me feel better, I just wish it took care of the computer problems!

Your other option is to have someone you trust email you a copy of the program you're trying to download. You can then shut down your internet connection and Avast, install the program, and then restart Avast and your internet connection.
