Help!
I just acquired an HP 1020, which I plan to use for remote printing in my vehicle. When I attempted to install it on my desktop, to make sure it was working, I received the following message during the latter part of the installation:
"The driver installation file for this device is missing a necesary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later."
I run Windows XP. Furthermore, my go-to laser printer for B&W loan docs is an HP 1022, a slightly newer and faster version of the HP 1020, which I assume would share virtually the same driver (if that sounds like I even know what a driver is, you've reached the wrong conclusion).
Does anybody have any idea what's going on, and how I, a moderately illiterate computer user, can correct it without having the techie out again? I've already shelled out $350 in the past few days; any more house calls and I may as well just have the title companies make out the checks directly to him.
Any help would be warmly received and greatly appreciated.
His Royal Hughness

Since the installation didn't complete, Z, the new printer's not in the control panel. But thanks anyway.
Maybe Andy can help. Normally, I'd hope that PAW would look at the problem. He knows everything. Need to frugilate a chromium bicarbonate insectionalized decomaphage? PAW can tell you how to do it.
I've even considered asking for his recommendation on between Viagra and Cialis. But only in a PM (privates message), of course.

Why not call HP and have them walk you through the steps of downloading the updated patch for those printers on-line??
I had the same problem with my printer ( Brother 7820n) when I purchased this laptop and it has window vista on it. What a pain it was. But it's working great now. I just simply downloaded the drivers from their site..

You say:
***Why not call HP and have them walk you through the steps of downloading the updated patch for those printers...?***
Maybe I'm showing how little I know, but the CD I got with the printer should be the latest. I gather from the message that I'm being told my operating system is antiquated, which it isn't, not that the driver included on the CD is deficient.

CALLING HP costs $$$ going online and typing back and forth is FREE

this is getting funkier & funkier. The HP help site doesn't list the 1020, only the 1020 Plus, which looks much like my 1022. In other words, it offers no assistance.
Gawd, how I miss the old Smith-Corona electrics!

It worked! Thanks, Z.
Anybody got a decomaphage they want frugilated? I can probably do that, too.

Kudos... Zee!
FYI y'all, check the manufacture support website regularly (every 3-6 months) for driver/firmware updates for your equipment.
CD installation disc included with (new) equipment is not always new and it's often about 6-12 months old.
Hugh, not sure what was done to get the printer working; here's the link for HP1022 drivers.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=439322&lang=en
When installing new printer (equipment) do the following: 1. Always install driver first (reboot windows). 2. With printer power off, connect to PC. 3. Power on printer...Windows should automatically recognize new hardware or the wizard will walk you through the installation process.

I found the updated 5/2007 version #20070518 on their site. That's the latest they have.

hugh....i havn't read the rest of the posts yet so.....
may be repeating something.....go to the hp web site and down load the driver for your printer from there.....it will also help you get ity installed automatically and mark that printer as your prefered printer [which you can change in printer settins by right clicking the printer you want to make the designated printer......hope i didn't make things more confusing....
