Internet Explorer problem

Good morning to all. I am having a big problem. My laptop is connected with my Linksy's wireless router. It says I am connected, and when brighthouse talked with me I am able to ping the modem, router, and goole, so I am connected. But the tech told me it is probably a IE problem that he cannot help me with, as settings might have to be adjusted. I need Andy, Mike, Charles, Paw, somebody,s help please in trying to rectify this problem. Thank you to all, Maureen.

Try going to your control panel and clicking on the wireless network wizard if you haven't done so already. Do you also have a regular desktop computer? Run the wireless wizard on that computer, that should get you up and running.

Re: Internet Explorer problem - Please describe

Maureen,

Can you describe the problem. The best way is to provide cookbook instructions on how to repeatedly duplicate the problem, stating each step and the result of that step. Also, what version of Windows you are using.

Try a quick test. Connect your PC directly to your cable modem (bypassing the router) and see if you can surf the web. If you can, then put the router back in and see what happens.

Another option, which may rule out IE, but not necessarily the network settings, is to download and install Firefox and see if you have the same issues.

But first try this sequence in the order provided:

1. Power down your PC (shut down).
2. Power off your router
3. Reset the cable modem by removing the power and removing the battery.
4. Wait at least 9 minutes.
5. Put the battery back in the modem.
6. Power up the modem
7. Power up the router
8. Power up the PC
9. Try to repeat the problem

Good luck.

ok so I need to disconnect the router and the modem, then reconnect? Just want to make sure I have this right. Also will I be able to download firefox if I cannot get the page up. This laptop has vista operating system. It is my sons laptop, and was working fine until 2 nights ago. My laptop is working fine with the wireless, and I do not want to mess that up, so please let me know if this would cause me any problems as well, and thank you both for helping me.

If you're able to ping another site, you're connected - the problem has to be in the web browser. Check Tools->Internet Options, then click the Connections tab. First make sure you're not configured for dial up, then click the LAN Settings button and make sure the check boxes for automatically detecting settings and using a proxy server are cleared.

Mike wouldn't going through the wireless or network wizard in the control panel take care of that too? Just wondering because that's the first place I start then I go to the options as you've described.
P.S. How are things there on the island? I have nieces and nephews out your way.

I don't think so, because she's obviously connected and able to get out to the internet (she said she was able to ping google.com). That tells me there may be something wacky in her browser settings. PAW's suggestions are great for a general reset, but if she was able to ping out before that it might not make a difference. The other possibility is it could just be something with Vista, and I have zero experience there.

Things here on Long Island are in a state of flux. The real estate market here is still relatively strong, especially out east (the Hamptons, where all the celebrities play...). Taxes are squeezing the middle class out, however, and I think things are going to get really interesting in the next 5 to 10 years... Where do your nieces and nephews live? I'm about dead smack on the middle of the Island - roughly the same distance from NYC and Montauk Point.

Hi Mike,

My nieces and nephews grew up in Centereach so they live in that general area. I remember when I was in the service I would go out to see them, it was the last stop, Lake Ronkonkoma on the LIRR. One nephew is former FDNY, he had a disability retirement about a year before 9/11, the other is NYPD disability retired too.
Hope all goes well for the future.
