New Notary Signing Agent
I am new to the business and would like everyones help. I am in the Houston, Tx area where I find signing these contracts with different firms are bit risky. Tell me about your first signing and how you went about getting clients on your own.
Help E. out!

Learn to use the search button before posting...Normally your questions will be answered. I did a search for new signing agent and you would not believe the number of posts I found. I hope you have thick skin. Go back about 2 pages and you will see why.

Evelyn, the business just isn't there for a signing agent who doesn't understand the mortgage business backwards and forwards, or who doesn't have a leg up in the network of mortgage related businesses (brokers, title companies, etc.). You got here three years too late. I am not trying to be negative, just factual.

Re: Ok, guys...maybe I read this differently...
Evelyn did say she is new to the business, but IMHO I don't think she was looking for handouts. The way I read it, is:
"I am in the Houston, Tx area where I find signing these contracts with different firms are bit risky. Tell me about your first signing and how you went about getting clients on your own."
What about signing these contracts in Tx is risky? Why is she concerned if, in fact it is not risky?
Then she wants to know about YOUR first signing, and how you got clients on your own.
I would say...reading the forums, and use the search. Sign up with as many free services as possible. Pay for a premier membership here, and other SELECT ones. Then MARKET, MARKET, MARKET! Read the forum!!!
My first signing was Scary! But, if you know how to be a notary, you've got most of it down.
When she starts asking, can I ride along, or what are your best companies. That's where I draw the line.

I don't need your handout...it was merely a question.

What kind of contracts are you talking about? I have never signed a contrat and probably never will. I paid for my license and my E&O and my notary, so why would I limit with whom I can work?

Cold calls
I spent two months on the phone cold calling, and everyone told me, "We already have notaries in your area".
This is how my first job went, seven years ago. They told me, "You don't have to explain anything, so don't worry about understanding the documents. Just witness the signatures".
So I got to the borrowers house, nervous and shaking, and a terrified look in my eyes.
"What's my loan amount?"
"I don't know."
"What's my interest rate?"
"I don't know."
(Leaning in with a suspicous squint in his eye. . . ) "Who do you work for?"
"I don't know."
"I'm not signing. This looks like a scam".
(Okay all you experienced people, you can beat me up now.)

Re: LOL - that was hilarious CJ!
I was a notary for years before I stumbled onto loan signing. I used the "shrug and smile" method many times to get through the docs. Back then, that was all most companies expected out of us. Not so these days! Another reason I'm glad I'm not just starting out.
