baby squirrel

Just a little interesting story to read: I feed squirrels in my back yard and lately the regular one has not been seen. Well yesterday we found a baby about 3-4 weeks old ,eyes still closed and not doing well, the mother never came for her all day by last night I was not going to let this little thing die ,so I bought her in,warmed her up started giving her pedialyte to rehydrate her and this evening started her on esbilac and she is doing great, keep your fingers crossed that she surives. On a sad note found another one this morning ,not sure how long he had been out there did what I could but did not survive.

You are very kind to have picked them up. I know it is hard to loose one but it is better to have tried than to have done nothing at all.

I did a signing about a month ago. The neighbors lived in a run down trailer and the situation wasn't very good. When I drove by the trailer the first time I saw two kittens.. WHne I was leaving I asked the borrowers if their neighbors would let me have the kittens. I am still looking for a home for them. They could be Maine Coons (sp?). One male and on female. The female is still skittish, but the male is very loving and likes to sleep on my throat or sometimes my chest.

well you and he are attatched now! Might as well keep them,I own 5 dogs,2 cats our bird passes 3 months ago and got rid of the iguana's when I bought my house 5 years ago. I go to the humane shelter just to look and my sister said me going there is like an alcaholic going to a bar!hahaha you should keep the kittens.

I raised 4 from the 'eyes still closed' stage onto turning them loose. It's a hoot! I am still puzzled by the fact that they could run along my arm held out horizontal while they were upside down--how do they do that?

Re: baby squirrel/ Cats/ Jean

Jean,

I would keep them and have no intention of dropping the kitens off at the Humane Sociey but I already have several and although I would love to keep them I think it would be best if they were in another good home. Rarely do I have difficulty breaking through to kittens or cats the female is still very skittish. I think if someone was home more and had the opportunity to work with her then sje would be better off.

I did a closing for a gal that was a registered (didn't know you could do that) squirrel foster home. I closed a loan for her just a few weeks after the first hurricane in 2004. I can't remember now if it was Francis or Jeanne that hit us first because one of them danced around in the Atlantic before coming back around to hit us with a second punch three weeks after the first. Anyway, the gal had so many squirrels to tend to after the storm that she was in dyer need of some supplies, mainly heating pads.

I dug up two heating pads that I had around the house and picked up two more at Kmart. A few days after I closed her loan, I showed up with the much needed supplies. She was thrilled, I was happy and we saved a few baby squirrels. It IS better to give than receive, don't cha think?

I am a registered veterinary technician, as well as notary, and due to the nature of the biz, we get baby squirrels, rabbits, baby skunks, possums, all kinds of birds, etc., brought to us from people just trying to help them out. I think it is a beautiful thing and it reminds me why I got into that business in the first place. Baby squirrels are very comical. They are like clowns! I've always believed that you can always judge a "man's" integrity by the way he treats animals. I think it is VERY CLASSY that you and whoever else takes the time out from their very busy schedules to humbly put such a little delicate creature before themselves. It says a lot. Your post was really nice to read. Thanks for sharing...it made me smile.

-Cheryl

Barbara is singning; Meeeemmmmmmmmmmrriiiiiiieeessss....

When I was a kid, about 9 years old, circa 1990....

We found a similiar lone baby squirrell and raised in the house until it was big enough to be returned to the wilds of our little back yard. I named the squirrell Peanut Butter.

My friends thought I was the lion tamer of the neighbor hood because I could go into the back yard with a cracker with a little peanut butter on it, as sure enough, the squirrell would come down out of the tree and take my cracker. She wouldn't let anyone else anywhere near her, but I was on the good list.

Sadly, Peanut Butter, even though she was very acrobatic (sp?), was not all that good at dodging the underside of a cars tire, and that's where her life ended...

I miss that damn squirrell.
