Brother HL-5250DNT
I'm about to buy the above printer. This is not the best time to buy, with the lack of business here in my rural area, but I need one that doesn't require my desk top be turned on and this has free shipping and a $55 discount. Anyone have any comments? (I do have two other Brothers, neither of which will work without the desktop fired up)

Network printers do not require a "host" computer. So a Brother, HP, Cannon, etc., if they are network capable, would all work. They are a stand-alone device on the network just like any other device (e.g. other computers). They will have their own addresses so each computer on the network, whether it be a desktop or laptop, would be able to access the printer directly as long as both the printer and the computer had a network connection.
I don't have that particular model or make, but have heard good things about it though.

I have had this printer for about four months now. After some initial tinkering with the dual trays to make it understand how to print a multi size loan packet it has been working fine. I would buy this again.

I use this exact model to print docs in my car. I absolutely love it! It's fast and reliable.

Thanks, all, for the info. I bought it at Costco for $230. Free shipping but I had to pay sales tax. Paul, I appreciate the info. I knew most of what you posted, but it was helpful to have it confirmed. Someone suggested a more expensive model at Overstock.com, but I didn't need that much printer. One thing I noticed was that the list price they quoted was 100 bucks more than the list price that Brother claims. Interesting.
