Deed Scam - now a Florida Company

In message #220788 I mentioned the National Deed company's scam of mailing out official looking letters to people telling them they need to get a certified copy of their deed for an exorbitant price.

I've been reading Source of Title's blog this morning: http://blog.sourceoftitle.com/index.php?title=the_certified_copy_racket&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 and it seems that there's another company now doing this: "Broward and Palm Beach county officials are warning residents not to be fooled by the official-looking letters from Plantation-based Florida Record Retrieval Inc."

This is a blatant scam which is targeted at the elderly. According to the above article,
' Broward Clerk of Court Howard Forman said. "You shouldn't charge people $60 for something they can get at little cost." ' and the article at SoT also said this company had been made to pay a penalty.

LOL...at least Florida has taken steps to do something about the scammer in their state. $35,000 worth. Read the article to learn more.

Reminds me of a certain lawyer in WI who read the Obits & sent a letter saying (fancier & real official-scary sounding) remaining JT must file a Termination of Joint Tenancy & suggested/instructed that s/he bring an Orig. Death Cert. & a copy of the Deed to his office & he'd take care of it. S/he did; he did...$275 worth for filling in a simple form that could be picked up at the Courthouse or would be mailed out, if requested, and could be mailed back with the actual $25 filing fee. Of course, the letter didn't say that.

Lee, I have heard that the motivating factors to get people's attention are:

Money/wealth/independence
Power/fame/importance
Sex/love
Fear/sense of urgency

If you don't believe it, listen to a healing evangelist type on TBN...or read an MLM ad...or a come on for an eBook by an author who is playing hopefully on the inspector/notary's inability to think critically.

An ad was forwarded to me off eBay yesterday which promised to teach inspectors how to earn $900 in the first week. LOL...yeah...write a book and sell it for $24.95 on ebay...that's how you do that.
