Delayed
Please offer your opinion.
A closing scheduled for this morning has been delayed maybe cancelled. I was advised just as I was walking out the door to go to it. I was asked if I could do it later, maybe in two or three hours. I said yes, but the fee would be increased. The title company told me she never heard of this... is that the case? Do any of you raise the fee when your told you have to sit around and wait for what might happen? I have never worked for this company before and I am not even certain that I would get a cancellation fee.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Would not charge increased fee...
If it did get cancelled & I printed docs w/o travel I would only charge a print fee. It stinks but its the price of doing business. Good Luck

I've been in the industry 8 yrs, FT and have only one company that pays me for a cancellation and I've never charged an additional fee for waiting around. That's just the animal, this industry is hectic and unrealiable. If I received a fee for cancellation from every company I'd be rich. However if I went to the closing I'm paid 1/2 my fee, again with exception of three companies they would pay me in full.

I make every effort to accomadate my companies that I work for. Even when a signing is delayed I am always willing to accept a later time and if I have another signing in the meantime or one that conflicts with the first I always try to arrange another time with the company or let them know that I am busy at that time. Never do I add on charges just because it inconvenienced me for a couple of hours. Remember, that company will call you again if you treat them right.

I appreciate all of your replies. I guess it bothers me that this company thinks I am sitting here eating bon bons waiting for them to get their act together. I resent that. The other thing was I was starting off below my standard fee to begin with and now I am being told to wait around with no guarantee that it will go through even if I wait around. I have since learned that this company has a rep for working this way. Finally, I guess I have been lucky when the signing had to be changed with no forewarning I have been compensated.

Thanks Again

Here's how you solve that
You don't sit and wait around. Just treat it like the cancelled signing that it is, and go about your day. If you're free when and if they call to reschedule, great. If not, they'll find somebody else.

Re: Here's how you solve that
It's the best way to keep your sanity. There are some things we can't control in the industry and that is one of them. So no point in getting bothered by it and definitely no point in sitting around waiting since a good percentage of the time it's not going to happen that day anyway.

Hi! noteclub/MD,
It is up to you and your circumstances to establish a set up fee. I do not believe that a customary fee works for all notaries public. Also, in your situation, I would consider many factors such as a profile written down steps to consider and would explain of it involves to complete a signing.
This is something to ponder about how much our time is invested.
I hope this helps you to deal with signing services.
Please, take a note: These folks have to divide their fee with you.

No more delays
Pretend the original appt was at Noon. Title company asks if you could "do it later, maybe two or three hours"......MAYBE? I would have told them I have another appt between 2 - 3pm, but I'm available at XX:XX. You keep control of your schedule. Never let anyone put you in limbo, causing you to turn down other work waiting for them to come through on a MAYBE.
"Maybe" means the loan signing probably ain't happenin'
Make them give you a solid time, not "maybe 2 or 3 hours"....actually, not MAYBE anything. Your "other" appts don't have to be other loan signings. Could be other notary work.

Re: No more delays
I have learned a valuable lesson today. Might I add that for me anyway I am no position to turn down signings... my phone rings so often I have to brush the webs off before I can answer it. Luckily this isn't the only thing I do.

Re: No more delays
If you get the call that it may be later, say, ok, call me when it's confirmed, unless we can set the time now? I've had this happen to me, I just go about my day, then if they call and I can do it, I do it, if not, I let them know that I got booked up while waiting.
