Get a call from..
Notary Direct this morning asking me to notarize a mortgage only then take docs to UPS drop box. We agree on a fee of $xx. Once I received the confirmation it says to sign in black ink and do not contact borrower, I’m okay with that. Here is the kicker ****Important Company Instructions*** Notaries please do a cursory inspection to make sure ALL the docs are signed. So, with that little sentence I call Notary Direct to clarify what they wanted me to do. Dawn said the borrower was signing the docs on the phone with the lender at an earlier time and they just want me to check to make sure ALL the docs are signed. I asked Dawn if there was a missing signature what should I do? (I knew what her answer was going to be) She says have the borrower sign it. Now, I quoted a fee of $xx to notarize a mortgage only, not to go thru the whole package and check for missing signatures. What the heck, if you want me to be responsible for signatures on ALL the docs then I will charge my normal fee. IMO they want me to do more work for less money just because they call it a “cursory inspection”. No thanks! Call someone else. Thanks for listening to me vent.

In my opinion Notary Direct is one of the worst in this industry. They always lowball you and if they find an even cheaper notary they will call you and cancel you.
The above is just my opinion.

I don't understand how you can notarize a signature then...

Yup, we're supposed to be Quality Control, but then ...
... we're not supposed to offer legal opinions. Huh?
When we're told "Good catch! " for noticing that the spouse is not on any of the docs, how come "Good catch! " doesn't include a bonus for catching something the person who drew up the documents should have caught?r

The definition of cursory
"adjective: hasty and without attention to detail; not thorough."
I've had the same packages from them - it's a timeshare (a small package), and the company doesn't want the notary there until after it's all done. A "cursory inspection" is just that - a quick flip through to see if anything jumps out at you. We're talking maybe 2 additional minutes at most; they're not asking you to carefully review the entire packet, and you're not responsible if they missed a signature.

**they're not asking you to carefully review the entire packet, and you're not responsible if they missed a signature. **
Which (for so many reasons) begs the question..."Then why have the notary review it?"

Probably because ND is somewhat anal about paying attention to details (which is not necessarily a bad thing). As a practical matter, the salesperson is talking the borrower through the whole process and telling them "now sign the document." By the time the notary gets there, it's a done deal.
The instructions are "Please do a cursory inspection..." It's not a command, it's a request. You flip through looking for obvious missed signatures. If you catch one, wonderful - ask them to sign; if you didn't catch it, well, that's why it's called a "cursory inspection"...
I've done a few of these - they don't pay much, but just like with loan mods, if you keep it close to home you can still make money because you're in and out in about 5-10 minutes. And I've always found Dawn to be an absolute pleasure to deal with.

They pay a little low, but they pay timely and the Capitol One packages I do for them are a breeze. I've always found them easy to work with.

"Cursory" should never be cursory.
If you take the assignment, you do the job. No excuses.
Notary Direct is one of my favorites. Very reliable about payment. Not the highest paying, but they're honest!
