Paper and Printer supply cost
It cost me 6% of my monthly income in paper and printer supplies each month. I know there are cheaper refill kits, reman toner but I have had no luck with them in the past (kits burtsing into the printer, mess and less copies) So I do buy HP brands. Even with buying in bulk 3-4 cases of paper and 3-4 toner cartridges

For paper: Costco, Sam's Club, FedEx(this one surprised me but they do have very inexpensive paper) and Quill.com.
Quill should only be used when they have a big discount code available.
I never use the HP or Brother toner: I use the cloned/re man cartridges from
www.ldproducts.com
I think there will be many other good suggestions.

I do get toner from Costco 55 vs 70 @ staples and paper I get from Quill or Office Depot. I only use companies that my business has lines of credit with and I only have a 30 day turn around time with Quill so I keep my orders with them under a certain $$$$$ amount.
Like I said tried other brands, but always seem to be issues with them or do not produce as much as the OEM brands.

Try Databrazaar.com Or SuperMediaStore.com for HP toner.
Try discountofficesupplies.com for legal size paper Corporate Express Brands CEB8514CT $39.56 / CASE
Return the empty cartridge to Office Depot for a ream of regular size paper.

Have you ever used LD toner because you can save over 66% of the cost? Many other websites offer the same discounts.

I use LD Products too, very reliable. Had a problem with a cartridge, no questions, they sent me a replacement and promptly.

I use Brother printers (5140 and a 5150). I have the resolution set on 300dpi (I don't use toner saver mode as it prints lighter vs just as dark but fewer dots with the 300dpi setting. My eye can hardly tell the difference) I refill my own toner with toner from tonerkits.com and for about 12 bucks, I get 7000-8000 pages per fill (80 bucks for the OEM cartridge at staples). On the Brother cartridges there is a big plastic plug that makes refilling easy. There has been some talk of short drum life, but I haven't seen it. I only replace the drum when the quality suffers. I am not sure of the exact page count I got from my last drum, but it had to be 200,000 pages when I look back at how much paper I have purchased during the time I used the drum. I bought a generic drum for about 1/2 the price of the OEM and it works fine. I clean the printer each time I refill the toner. I also have purchased the toner clones from the sites mentioned on this board without any problems.
Paper, I will pick it up even if I don't need any if I run across a real deal. I bought 5 cases of legal when I was on vacation from a store in a small town that was going out of business this past September for 18 bucks per case .. sometimes you get lucky. Always look for a deal and buy when you find one. You pay the most when you run out in the middle of a busy day.
I have learned to recycle my clips more, I don't pay a lot of money for pens.

300dpi vs econ mode
Mine is set up the same as yours, Glenn. I bought my printer from Andy Le, and he had me set it up that way. He explained the reasons at the time, which if I remember correctly, were the same as yours: still saves on toner, but you don't get the lightening effect.
I'm not techy and he is, so I just trusted him!
