Real Estate Agents and NSA's

I am currently scheduled to take my CA real estate licensing exam on Dec. 17th. Ooooo, am I skrrrd! Boy, have I been spanked too, due to the ever-decresaing markets woes, I've heard it all..."bad time to be gettin' in the business, Cheryl...what were you thinkin, Cheryl?" Well, the course is paid for, I got excited, perhaps blinded by my own enthusiasm and muse, or just plain crazy. But...I'm gonna make it a go, darnit!

I am concerned about when (if) I do obtain my RE license, will this lead to the probability of it negating the amount of signing work I receive? Perhaps a "Conflict of interest" concerning the potential for internal marketability, of which, of course, I would not do. Should I keep my new licensure under wraps while marketing myself as an NSA?

OH, OH...1 more question...

In regard to the salesperson licensing exam, I have been pressed to believe that the exam is almost entirely based on the PRINCIPLES aspect. Although I've been studying and cramming like a crazy person...(not too far a stretch from my original personality), I'm trying to fine-tune for the next 10 days...if anyone could assist me in diverting/squashing or even attesting to this rumor, it would be so very greatly appreciated.

Oh, and a testament to my craziness...I just got married on Monday...soooo, I get to apply and "hurry up and wait" for my name change! Yay! (Not!!)

Thanks so much in advance to anyone willing to assist me...

I had a RE license about 15 yrs ago. Let it expire. THEN, it was based on principles....not sure what it is today but it's not quantum physics so you will do fine. Check with the California SOS, I don't believe it is a conflict of interest but double check with them.

Rather than look at it as a bad time to get in the business, just think to yourself "for all the people getting out of the RE biz and I'm getting in, more for ME". The market won't always be in the down spiral. They say it's not a great time to become a NSA either, but I think the opposite, I can take my time and learn what I need to learn. Plus, I don't focus on just being a NSA, I want to learn to notarize all types of documents so I market myself to so many other areas. I'm getting lots of calls from the family of Seniors at convalescent homes and assisted living facilities.

I was referred to an attorney who called me to meet her at a client's home on a Sunday afternoon to notarize their Will, Trust and other documents. That was 8 notarizations plus my travel fee. I got paid on the spot. It was nice. And yes, the check cleared ! And they appreciated me coming to them.

I'm an optimist so, it's a great time to get in the RE business....more for YOU!!!

Hi Cheryl, I took the exam in Sept. got in just in time for the conditional license. Yes the test is only on the principles part. It was not nearly as difficult as I was prepared for. Not much math on it. If you have the principles book do the quizzes in it over and over again. Some of the questions are the same just asked in a different way. Good luck and let us know how you do.

A tip I used when taking a test, if you have quizes in your study guide mark the correct answers and just study them. Don't mess your mind up with the wrong answers. Then if you take a multiple choice test the right answer will jump out at you.

I just got my RE license, and the broker I work for is aware that I also do SA work. As long as the signing isn't for a property that the brokerage has an interest in, it's not a conflict.

As for this being a bad time to get started, I was told just the opposite by one of the other agents. He started years ago when the market was hot and just about anyone could make a sale; now that things have cooled off, he has to learn to adjust. If you start when the market isn't great, you'll learn how to deal with a down market and be in a better position when the upturn comes (and it always does, eventually).
