Reporting back

A while back, I posted about an Internet site I had discovered that offers $8 prescription eyeglasses.

I just received my first pair, and they are excellent. The fit is fine, and the optics are indistinguishable from the $200-300 glasses I have purchased locally for years. If you are interested, the site is zennioptical.com.

Good luck, and good vision!

They are great. $14.95 total.

The only part I'm unsure about is - how do you know if the frames are going to fit your face? I'm used to trying different frames on to see how they look, and here you're just working from a picture....

Frame sizes

Mike, on a pair of glasses that fit you well, look at the inside of the "bow" near the temple. You will see numbers, such as 57 or 54, etc. That is the frame size that will fit your face. Example: My glasses are a size 53 and fit just fine, but they wouldn't fit my daughter very well since her frames are a 51. (the number might actually appear as a fraction, such as 54/17) The larger number represents the "eye size" (lens) and the smaller number represents the bridge of your nose.
If the numbers are worn away and you can no longer see them, go to the local WalMart optical and try a few pair. Jot down the frame size on a pair that fits you well, and order away.

Re: Frame sizes

Well, you learn something new every day... thanks for the info, Lisa.

Of course, my next problem is that I can't see the numbers without my glasses on, but I'll sort that part out... Smile

Hugh, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I ripped off my contacts when I got home and put them on to see how the vision would be. OMG, they are great. Of course, I haven't had a good pair for awhile.

Since I wear my contacts all the time (one for distance, one for reading) I haven't purchased glasses in years and my old ones are scratched...but who wants to spend $300 for a pair of glasses they wear maybe five days out of the year?

Both of the lenses in my new pair are set for distance. I was just outside in the dark and I can see a gnat scratching in the tree next door. I forgot what it was like to see with that kind of crispness--both eyes set for distance.

I won't ever drive again for long distances at night without these on. My vision is excellent for distance in my new $14.95 glasses! Now, I can't read, but that's the same with any glasses I have with a distance prescription.

I'll get an Rx from my doc tomorrow for the same as my contacts are and one to compliment my contacts (put glasses on over contacts for driving). My doc is willing to write both for me so I can see for all occasions. These are definitely my driving pair.

I'm going to avoid bifocal types until I have to. The dual vision close/distance works great for me with contacts. You'd be amazed how well your eyes and brain work together to give you the best vision. Sounds crazy but it works.

I'm very pleased. Best bargain I have encountered in years.

I resisted that also, but was finally convinced to try progressive lenses a few years ago. Walking down a flight of stairs was an interesting experience for a couple of days, but I have really sensitive eyes and was able to adapt to the lenses quickly.

Re: Hugh, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Mike, Have you tried the distance/close monovision pairing of lenses?

I was just about to shell out for the high dollar bifocal contacts when my doc suggested this. I have been doing it for four years now and it's great for my every day routine.

I look at a computer screen and docs all day long...no problem.

My vision is -4.50 and -4.75 nearsighted. With both eyes covered for distance I have to wear a +1.50 pair of cheaters to read.

My mother is 73 and only needs a pair of cheaters to see up close! Not fair!

That's the glasses I need. I too have the monovision/correction contacts. They are perfect for what I need except distance and night driving. I got so tired of taking my reading glasses off then back on. The Doc told me about wearing glasses to correct my distance vision while wearing contact ... I wasn't interested at the time but I am now. It's so nice to see things at a distance... which is lost when wearing my contacts. I never take my contacts out except to clean every once in a while. Otherwise they are in 24/7.

I'll order my $15.00 bifocals soon since I already have that prescription...... oh lord ! :O)

I'm curious to see what you think after you get your glasses to correct over contacts!

Re: Hugh, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

My eyes are so bad that I need either both distance lenses and reading glasses, or bifocals. Progressive lenses work really well for me, because there's no jump from one lens to the next; I was amazed at how easy they were to get accustomed to.

Poor eyesight is a family trait here - EVERYBODY in my family wears glasses. My SO uses cheaters for reading, assuming she can remember where she put them - she has about 6 pair of them, and I still have to read the menu to her when we go out to dinner....

Re: Hugh, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

My eyes are still pretty good, but reading glasses I fear may not be too far off. I bought a pair of progressive lenses years ago because I, too, am a bit nearsighted. I was often in conferences where I was listening to a speaker and trying to take notes and it was the on-off-on-off thing ad nauseum! I LOVE the progressives!!!! And they look great. No one would ever guess they are bi-focal (actually, tri-focal...) I don't weat contacts -- but I will definitely go that route again.

Thanks for the information Hugh, I'll let my husband know about this! He just started shopping around for a some new frames and the prices at the optometrist are unbelievable.

Take care,
Kim
