The Final Step - No Pay/No Communication
I am a very experienced Signing Agent who, until recently, was the sole agent for several companies in my area. With the crunch last summer, I decided to solicit business using the various online Notary search engines such as this one. Unfortunately, I did not check into the past messages posted about The Final Step until I began to wonder why I was not receiving payments or even the courtesy of a return phone call or email to my inquiries.
Yes, I've been duped. I performed 2 closings for this company in early October. I now leave a constant stream of voicemails for them as they do not answer the phone. Maybe they would be able to pay for the work we have done for them if they did answer the phone to generate new business.
The oweness is not only with the Final Step but also with the Lending Tree - the lender in both instances. Going through the bulletin board, I've noticed that this issue has existed since 2004 if not earlier! According to the representative at the Lending Tree, they have fielded many calls concerning the non-pay of signing agents for work performed. She did tell me that Final Step was paid for the both of the loans I closed for them. So, in my opinion, The Lending Tree needs to answer as to why they continued to use this title company when they were aware of this issue? Are or were their loan officers getting kick backs from the title company? Maybe this is another issue to which the Feds should be made aware.
I have plenty of roll-over minutes on my cellphone to blow through, so I will continue to leave messages for this company ad nauseum. I suggest that all other agents who are having this problem to do the same if possible. If they do not have the courtesy to return my calls or yours, then I have no problem doing this.

I have had the problem with Final Step. They finally paid me 2 weeks ago for closings in Sept. I placed many calls to Thao at Lending Tree, she told me that Final Step will not get any more of their business until their notaries are paid up. Just keep calling emailing and send them your invoices. Do you have Thao's number? if not here it is 949-726-4525. good luck, I know how frustrating this is.

I have done 2 signings for them in Sept and Oct and not paid yet. I have called about 100 times, and no return calls. Just beware of this company. SCAM!

They will send out the checks or close their doors for good. All we need to do is ban together and call them and the lender. They are bad business and they know it. Report them to the BBB as well.

They owe me for a signing too. I reported them to the BBB. The BBB replied and told me that they do not handle this type of situation. I will start calling The Final Step constantly, maybe that will work.

If they have a fax line, fax them every day. Faithfully! Email consistantly, daily. Tell them you are not going away.

Good Luck. Here's a copy of the message that I just received from TFS (28 December 2007) in response to my most recent request for payment of a past due invoice:
"Amy , i am sorry i can not help you . I am just helping today . Today is my last day here and Gary Plummer the owner is filing a bankruptcy so i guess he would send letter to all his creditors and notaries . I am sorry you have to deal with all these problems.
Luis"
I guess I should consider myself fortunate that all I am out is $25 for a doc print fee on a cancelled signing. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....
