Back Up Cell Phone?
I'm all for being prepared. I've got the back up printer; extra email addys and fax numbers; as well as a great notary friend/mentor who is always there when I need her. But must I also have a back up cell phone? Tonight while attending a meeting, my PDA went "kerplunk" into a public commode. Instinctively, I fished it out with my hands (it cost a good chunk of change) and wiped it down with toilet paper. Seconds later the screen flickered and died. I had purchased insurance for the phone at purchase, so I immediately called and expected a replacement phone to be overnighted immediately. Well...for whatever reason VeriZon directed me to their insurance company, Asurian, to file an insurance claim. A replacement phone/pda won't be shipped until 2/5. I'm open to suggestions as to what I can do in the meantime. The mere idea of missing calls for notary assignments gives me the heebie-jeebies. How many of you keep a 2nd cell phone on hand? PS: Will my hands ever feel clean again?

Re: Back Up Cell Phone? How about a pre-paid phone
Get a pre-paid phone and have Verizon forward your current number to the PP phone number. (I'm assuming Verizon can/will do that. Cingular, my carrier, does.)

Perfect reason to have a toll free #
When something likes this happens, you go to your 800 # provider online and just adjust the ring to # and Bam, problem fixed. I also carry a Tracfone cell, for those times when I am out of cell range for my T-Mobile and need to get those fine tuned directions in the country.

Save a wet cell phone
Michelle,
Although I don't have any advice about a back-up phone, your story hit a nerve with me. When I have my cell phone on the belt clip it has popped off on occasion. I'm always fearful that the phone will pop off the clip at just the worst time possible.
Don't know if this will help now, but some time back I saw this on google. Maybe for future reference?

Michelle...You should be able to pick up a "loaner" phone
while you are waiting. That's what I did when my blackberry went "kerplunk".
