HP 2430tn, needs help!

I'm "attempting" to use a generic cartridge, having some probs. Any hints will be appreciated. Printer doesn't want to recognize it.

Slap it in the face - turn it off, pull out cartridge, wait a minute or two, replace cartridge and turn back on. Sometimes I have to do this and I skip the powering-down, just pull out/replace cartridge.

So far .... so good. Hope it works!
