My unprofessional opinion: Vista has to go!
This is a horrible operating system, it so wants to be like Apple's operating system and it just cannot be.
It is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow, it's like stopping at a traffic light in West Palm, FL....those traffic lights take forever to turn green and it takes vista forever to process!
I hate the sounds, I hate the icons, I hate the security that will barely allow me to reinstall switfview, etal. I hate the way outlook operates.
I'm no expert as Andy is, but this is just gone (as soon as my husband takes it off).

That is why I posted the free Virtual PC 2007. The VPC enable you to create a separate operating system (a virtual Vista computer) using the resource of your computer as a trial run (to see if it's compatible with your existing hardware/software) before you do the real upgrade/install.

I have a pc that I was going to recycle because it was too slow. Its a 1.8ghertz and it takes hours to open browsers. My friend gave me an old computer that had a 512mg memory chip, I installed it in the one I was going to throw away and wow! now is as fast as my primary pc.
Vista needs 2G memory. Maybe that's all you need.

Vista was already installed on my new HP laptop that I got on Saturday.
I tried to tough it out so I didn't have to uninstall Vista and install XP.

If that is a new computer, get in touch with HP. It should work perfectly. You may have another issue besides Vista. My experience on computers that come new with Vista installed is that they work just fine. The main problems are coming when people try to upgrade a computer that does not have enough processing power or memory. I am not sure in your case, but I think you can choose to run in a lower mode, like Vista Basic, to where the resources required are not much more than XP.
I am not an expert, so perhaps the more computer savvy persons on the board have an opinion.

Glenn has been nice enough to respond to me both on this message board and in private messages about my problems with the Vista upgrade.
My Vista Upgrade was done on my computer that is approx 2 years old and it's just a bad upgrade in my opinion. A 2 year old computer is too old to upgrade.
My son's upgrade on his laptop said: "Vista ready"/or something like that and he had no problem upgrading the Vista system.
I will be buying a new computer within the next week and it will have Vista (Duh) and I am sure it will be great, but I really wish Microsoft wouldn't sell these ugrades unless they were good for previous Microsoft
I came back to my office 2 days ago (just one horror of many horror stories) and I tried to print a loan package and it took over 40 minutes for my computer to reboot.
Well, this is my last whine about this computer.
