Notary signing at a Prison in CA question
I haven't done a signing at a prison before I'm doing a favor for a friend. I have a couple questions if someone will help me I need to help her with a Power of Attorney. Do I have to get permission/appointment ahead of time since I need his signature in my journal or is there a special number I will have to call? Not sure of the steps at Los Angeles men central jail the number I called getting the run around.
Thank you in advance

I notarize signatures for inmates...
in the local jail as a free service for those down on their luck. My biggest problem is that they frequently do not posses an ID and since this is a jail not a prison they do not have a Department Of Corrections ID which is acceptable in California. You need to show up during visitation times and check before hand whether or not they can produce an ID for you. I have become known to the jail officers and in the absents of ID they will serve as credible witnesses for the signer. They have a special room that has a slot where you can pass your journal into them for signing, an officer is always present for this.

And yours is a labor of love. What a kindness, Larry. You are a bigger "man" than I. Just the phone calls to the jail was enough to put me off of jail work.

Good luck. I learned they have notaries and will work with the prisoner in the local jails here in Texas.
It better be a labor of love if you are going into the LA jail...that or charge a huge amount. It's going to take awhile.

I recently received a call to notarize a POA for a prisoner in the regional jail. It was her mother who called me because she felt she was not getting a response from the jail personnel. When I called the jail to find out the procedure, I was told I would not be allowed to do it since it would require a "contact visit" with the prisoner (in order to pass the ID and journal to each other). I was told I would not be authorized for a contact visit, since the only people who are generally allowed contact visits are the attorneys for the prisoner, and even clergy is not allowed a contact visit. I was also told that they have notaries on staff and that the family "would just have to be patient".

Re: Power Of Attorney form?
If your state doesn't have one online that anyone can download I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole, Wendy.
You can laugh at me acting like that if you want to, but it's UPL IMHO for you to take a POA to a signer to sign.
Oh, but it's a friend? It can come back to haunt you.
In 1993 I was walking with my then husband through a dept. store where my aunt worked. She asked me to notarize my grandmother's will. I said no, because my grandmother had dementia. It ticked my aunt off. My whole family, actually. It was wrong. No can do.
Well, I divorced that husband in 1994 and if he'd have observed/known I pulled a trick like that (ad I done it), he would have definitely tried to get me in trouble with it. He would have held me hostage with it.
Keep your nose very clean. Friends today can be enemies tomorrow. People with friends/family in jail get desperate. JMHO.

Re: Power Of Attorney form?
The person requesting the POAs (not you) can download "officially recognized" form from the web site of the County Recorder. If you are in a small county without this, go LA County, SF County, Sacramento County. They have forms; some are even fillable PDF forms, as a public service. I agree with Brenda, I would not provide the form, but I would let the client know where they can be accessed. I hope this helps.
