Hi, All:

Had occasion to prove an email I scanned and sent was Read by the SS’s client. The SS, to whom the email was cc’d, said she didn’t receive her copy ‘either.’ When I sent her the “receipt” documenting the specific time the email was opened by her client, her reply was, "Wow….what do we do, huh? That’s why we HAVE to keep paper trails…to cover our “backsides”!! J Thank you, Susie!”

At first, I was bugged by the increase in my inbox, but it sure came in handy as a shirt on a pocket this week.

Do you get Receipts for your emails?

I’m wondering if there are other email programs that make sorting, for instance, more intuitive? (a wag of the finger…”Dang you, Bill Gates!”) Any ‘tips of the hat?’

No I don't get receipts, but I did have an SS worker "fabricate" and email she had supposedly sent to me with an attachment (that she forgot to send me). I confronted her and she denied typing it up and wanted me to go back because of "my mistake". After pointing out inconsistencies with the fabricated email and her other email, she agreed to Fedex the missing document to the borrower instead of paying for me to go back. It pays to have a sharp eye and good records...

Elizabeth, do you sue Outlook Express?

You can automatically generate Receipts in OE, if you're interested. Makes life easier to know when every email you've sent was Read. As they say; Document the file.

I don't use email receipts, and I'm mildly annoyed when I'm asked for one (I don't allow my software to automatically send one and I don't always comply.)

I do have my fax set to print send confirmations and a weekly report. I keep those.

By the way, you can set up a "Message Rule" in Outlook Express (or Outlook, or Mozilla Thunderbird) to automatically move those receipts out of your inbox and into a seperate folder. You'd never have to deal with them, just collect them.

"Mildly annoyed?" To furnish a receipt? Too much trouble to

acknowledge you got an email - automatically? So somebody can document their file? Remind me never to have to deal with you in cyberworld.

I agree Gary. It's a sticker in my craw, too. Only for a few do I comply with those...only for business and things of relevance which need a receipt. Most of the time I am using gmail anyhow and those aren't coming through to gmail.

However, when it is a confirmation or a set of docs, I immediately and politely reply to let the sender know I got the information they sent me. When it is important, I take care of bidness...when it's just a snooty "I am so danged important you better let me know if you got this..." No...not so much.

And this is not some egomaniacal thing. I'm talking about documenting the fact that You got and Opened My email (with, perhaps attachments.) And when you say "I didn't get it," and I prove "Yes, you did."

I'm talking about CONFIRMATION.

Are you saying that You're so danged important, You can't acknowledge you received a message?

The arguments against confirmation here, aren't holding much water.

Susan, get a grip. No one is arguing with you. People are entitled to ignore what you prefer and have ravings of their own. Now, pass that crack pipe this way and stop hogging it.

Yes...the crack pipe!

It's amusing to me how Late Night Susan apparently gets about a cupful of sand in her bathing suit bottoms when a conversation around her that has NOTHING to do with the law, ethics, nothing to do with notary rules and surely nothing to do with her own personal reality disagrees with her. Keep differing opinions to YOURSELF, beebles! Susan don't play that!

Usually that kind of nasty attack is brought on by spilling the bong water in your mother's car or forgetting to pass the pipe. I doubt seriously this is her problem...so .... it just must be a dislike for differing opinions.

Oh...and before any rumors get started: I don't say the above because I am a proponent of taking drugs (legal or illegal!), or because I am bi-polar as one of the hairy old apes on this forum likes to tell loan officers about me...it's because I am joking...and if you can't take a joke............................wait a minute...what was the question???

the environment. Much like my own Emerald Triangle area Oregon certainly is fertile ground for all kinds of hallucinogenic excursions and generally is the home of people with some very strange alternate realities: at least in that neck of the woods.

Snooty? The point is to document when They opened My email.

I'm such a professional, commanding my feez, but I can't be bothered to let you know I got your message with an automatic receipt because you think you're too important, and I don't think you're impotant enough. I'd rather take the time to send a separate email to say I got what you sent, as the automatic thing really bothers me...

On the other hand, I can't prove you opened (or received) my email of [important] information because I just won't do the "automatic" thing.

Do you have Outlook to get a receipt?
I use yahoo and then forward everything to my gmail account. Can you you find out if someone opened an email in these types of accounts.

When I confirm receipt of an order or any communications with an SS, if I send a reply I always direct a copy of the communications to myself and then file it under the file of that particular SS. It's a few extra steps, but it works for me! I also write the time and date in the lower right corner of my fax backs so the receipent knows I have a record of when I faxed the document back.

My fax automatically generates an individual confirmation

Most fax machines have the ability to set it to generate no reports, generate a group report either on demand or automatically for a set period of time, or generate an individual confirmation for each fax sent. Mine is set so that it will generate and print out an individual confirmation when a fax is successfully received by the other machine. It will also generate a report when a fax does not go through - either through some error on the other end or because the papers jammed or whatever). That lets me know I need to try again. I keep the fax-successful confirmations with the rest of the paperwork for that closing (printouts of emails, closing confirmations, any notes I might have made, driving directions, etc.). More than once I've had someone call and say I didn't fax something, and I quickly let them know that "my fax machine says it talked to your fax machine on Monday, January 25, at 10:43 AM and shows that your machine received 4 pages. Would you like me to fax my confirmation to you?" And they back off and go find the fax, which is usually either still in the pile next to the fax machine or is sitting on someone's desk. LOL

Check out Options, then Receipts, then Required...

and poke around. There are some cool, time-saving, documenting features. Don't know about Yahoo or AOL, as I don't entirely trust those.

Honesty is the best policy...

Only once in my 9-5 corporate years I resorted to using the open receipt. It was when I had a boss who always looked over my shoulder, but would then lie through his teeth of not receiving a report and/or issue when brought up in meetings to dodge the bullet.

It's been said many times here that this is a business and if you don't treat it as such, many will think they own you....Work smarter not harder, have a plan and stand your ground.

Email receipts, spam, & security

I do not allow Outlook to automatically send receipts, because the majority of email is spam, and I don't want to send any kind of response to spam.

If a window appears on my screen asking for an email receipt, and I don't recognize who is asking for a receipt, I assume the window is a fake. I will not respond, will close Outlook, and run a virus/spyware scan.

If a window appears, asking for an email receipt to someone I know, I'll allow the receipt to be sent.

Remember that just because an email was received does not necessarily mean it could be read. An attachment could be corrupt, or the recipient might not have any software able to read an attachment. The email could be html, and the recipient's mail software might not be able to read html, or the html capability might be disabled. If I could not read an email, I'd send a reply explaining the situation.

No because you can choose not to send one so theres no point

Outlook 'asks' you if you want to send a receipt. If the recipient says no, there's nothing you can do about it.
