"I thought you said 'Fountain'"
Have any of you ever had a misunderstanding where you thought the person said the location of the closing was one place and it turned out to be another?
I got a call from a lender to do a closing in what I thought was Fountain, although I didn't realize that it was in Thornton until I got the confirmation. It was 100 miles away. Farther north than Denver.
Maybe it was a bad telephone connection, or maybe she was talking while eating lunch, but I thought she said 'Fountain'. I do closings there all the time. And no one has ever asked me to go to Thornton to do a closing.
I called the lender and told her there was a misunderstanding, but I was willing to go there. I had a good relationship with them and didn't want to leave them in a lurch. And she agreed to pay extra for travel expenses.
It felt odd being that far north. Not so much the distance, but the fact that there are a lot of signing agents in that area. I felt like a poacher. And it was the first time that I've ever had to go through the infamous 'Mousetrap' to get to a closing. I don't know how the signing agents up in Denver cope. I'm sure glad I don't live up there. But I made it there and back okay.
It's no doubt the only time I'll ever do a closing up that way. It was a good experience. I'll just have to be certain the next time I get a call to do a closing in 'Fountain'.

If you realized the mistake as soon as you got the confirmation, how on earth would that leave them in a lurch? Surely they could just pick up the phone again and call someone just like they called you.
But if they were willing to pay more and you were willing to drive I guess it all worked out fine. I just hope they made it worth your while and you didn't do it for some ridiculously low fee just to "help them out".
