copy of birth cert.
I was asked at a loan signing recently if I could notarize a copy of a birth certificate for their son who is a minor and traveling without parents. I observed the copy being made a attached a loose acknowledgement. This was my first - did I do the right thing for these folks and legally? I ws caught off-guard and relied upon my memory during training a long time ago. thnks. Patti

I believe you can only get certified copies from the county he/she was born or from Seattle, which covers the state. You might want to call the SOS tomorrow in Olympia and ask about notarizing birth certificates. My county clerk told me that all birth/death/marriage certificate copies come from them, so I don't touch them , I refer them to the county. Good luck

Patti, call these people.......
and tell them that you were mistaken and cannot certify a copy of their sons birth certificate. You don't want this kid heading out with what he thinks is a certified copy and running into trouble because it's not. The custodians of the original normally certify copies.

Birth certificate is a vital record. One can only request a certified copy from the agency/county where the record originated.

One thing those borrowers will need notarized is a letter (signed by both parents) giving permission to travel ~ an absolute if the minor is leaving the country.

Thanks to all who responded. I telephoned the parents and passed along the website that I was directed to. What would we do without each other? Thanks again!

That includes vacations, too, folks. You'd be surprised at the number of people who can't board planes or cruise ships with their children because "We're going on vacation to the Bahamas/on a cruise to Nova Scotia, we're not leaving the country!"
Good thing travel agents are tuned in, too bad the Internet isn't. . .
