justify fee and still stay within the law
Over time, I've seen several post re: how to charge say $75 to do a signing when you are called by the borrower and all you do is the notarizing and don't do SA work. I've done a few of these and I alsways drop the docs in the O/N box or take them to a fedex or UPS store. My fee for this service is billable at $10.00 per mile. Since the drop boxes/store are 7 miles RT, I have a $70 charge built into my fee for ANY signing. That charge has nothing to do with traveling to the borrower's location (which is, in general, limited by each state as to what you can charge), and nothing to do with my fee for the actual notarizations (also state limited).

Not sure about MD, but in VA we can charge a reasonable fee for travelling. I've always taken that to mean that I can charge not just for my mileage, but the time it takes me to travel to the borrowers home to do the notarization. Let's face it, in the DC-Baltimore metro area, it takes longer to travel to and from a place -- even if it is only the next 'burb than it does to do any notarization or complete closing.
