Any MS Windows Vista Takers?
Do we have any adventurous souls who've ponied up for the new MS Windows Vista OS? Tech related news sources say only 15% of all current pc's are Vista capable. In addition to looking at Vista I did a test drive this morning of the new MS Office 2007. MS has a slick way of being able to see & actually run the new MS Office 2007 programs over the Internet without downloading to your computer.

I'd never even consider a new MS OS until it had been out for 6 months. They always put them out long before they are ready, and let the general public deal with the bugs. I used to beta test for them in the '90's and quit after one of their releases of IE. It was buggy, shut your whole system down, and you could not uninstall it. Only way to get rid of it was to reformat and do a clean install of your OS. That was more than enough for me!!

Personally, I'm not going to upgrade to Vista for at least a year maybe two. From what I read most major corporations won't be upgraded to Vista till 2010, but corporations are usually slower to upgrade than the general consumer. This really is a major upgrade for MS and with some of the major changes with the system I'd wait to upgrade till the majority of software vendors have upgraded their apps to run on Vista. Doing any upgrade before then could potentially run into issues where your non-MS apps don't work, especially with the changes MS made to security where apps no longer run as an administrator on the machine.
That being said evidently 3/4 of the new machines being rolled out now will have some version of Vista installed on them. And really if you're buying a new machine I'd get Vista installed. Just don't get rid of your old machine till you're positive all your apps still run on Vista.

All my hardware is ready (dou-core PC and laptops) but I don't feel like upgrading all my software just yet. If it was me I would wait till the bugs are worked out.
Dell is forcing it on you now, all computers are loaded with Vista now.

I'm waiting too, but really want MS Office Prof 2007
The cost is so high, though, that I just can't upgrade right now. $299 is just too much for upgrading software.

If you know someone who is a teacher, and I think students (I dont' know if they have to be college or not) may also be able to order from there, you can go to www.journeyed.com MS Office Prof 2007 is $199.98 with a free flash drive.

Thank you, notaryfla!!!!
I do know someone who works at the local college and who would be able to order this for me. I don't need the free flash drive - got several of those from past Black Friday FAR (Free After Rebate) deals. MS Office Professional 2007 at that price is within my budget. Whew. Thanks for sharing.

I'm the Guinea Pig...
...as I just ordered Vista Ultimate & Office Small Business 2007 off of Amazon.com. I'll keep everyone abreast of my experience with both of them.

Quicken sent notice sayin you would have to upgrade to get Vista to work. I will not upgrade for now for that reason. Let them get the kinks out.

Here's What I Found...
...on the Quicken web site % compatibility issues with Vista.
******************************************************
"Quicken 2007: Quicken 2007 has been tested with Microsoft® Windows® Vista, and no known issues exist in the most current release.
Quicken 2005 and 2006: Quicken 2006 and 2005 have been tested on Windows Vista, and the following issues have been identified:
When accessing QHI help while running Windows Vista, an error message appears. There is no workaround for this issue. If you have not upgraded to the latest release of each Quicken version, scripting errors occur when you access help topics. Update your version of Quicken to the latest release to resolve this issue. If you are not logged in as an administrator, an error occurs when you try to update your version of Quicken. To resolve this issue, log in as an administrator and follow the update instructions for Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2005, depending on the version you are using.
Quicken 2004 and earlier: Quicken 2004 and earlier have not been fully tested on Windows Vista. Therefore, Intuit cannot guarantee Quicken functionality or offer technical support if you are using Windows Vista with these products. Quicken may or may not work properly on this operating system. If you are experiencing issues using Quicken on Windows Vista, you can install your current version of Quicken on a supported operating system or upgrade to the latest version of Quicken."
******************************************************
I have Quicken Premier Home & Business 2006 & will see how many other issues surface besides those listed. This is the first year in the last 10 that I didn't upgrade to the latest Quicken (2007) when it came out in mid 2006.

Dang, I have to remember to not hit "Enter" after typing the subject line...
Anyway, there have also been reports of hardware not working with Vista. One I know of for sure that is not compatible is the HP 1020 printer (which is the backup laser I have), so there's no way I would upgrade at this point.
Best practice - do not ever try to be on the "bleeding edge" if you use a computer to run your business. Microsoft's track record on new releases is dismal - stick with what's working for you today, and upgrade only after al the dust settles (which will probably be at least a year or so..)

Vista... just east of Oceanside. Lots of gang violence there lately. I will have to to wait to move my business to that place when I know it's safe.

If it ain't broke ......
why fix it? I'll do what I have always done. Only upgrade when I need to in order to get something to work properly or the old computer breaks and it is more cost effective to buy a new one and get a new OS with it. Guess I am old fashioned or just thrifty.
