Does This Bother Anyone?

I just ordered a new NotRot stamp (recommended by someone on this site) .....I was able to order the stamp w/o having to fax a copy of my commission to NotRot. This means that ANYONE can obtain a stamp simply by filling out a form and paying for it. What do you think?

I would think that information is checked by Harry and his staff using your commission number. It would be easy to verifiy with each state SOS. I would also think the payment information provided would crossreference for name and address etc.

Re: Commission # Not Requested

there was no request for the Com # so therefore they don't have it to check it.

Up to your state's SOS

In CA nobody can manufacture a notary seal without an ORIGINAL authorization letter.

I know that Harry and crew conform to CA law/procedure. I don't know what IN law is on the matter.

P.S. You don't really think it would be hard for a scoundrel to get ANY rubber stamp he wanted do you?

Re: Up to your state's SOS

Yes, I realize that anyone can get anything printed up....I'm just a little taken aback that an official notary site would not require proof of commission......but like you say, it might be IN law - these Hoosiers are goofy at best.....(ex-Chicagoan)

No tug of war.....I'm an extreme diehard Bears fan - most here in NW Indiana are Bears fans - but IF the Bears don't win then at least we can be a little happy that the Horseshoe Heads won, I guess?

For crying out loud, is your state California, has NNA lobbied in Indiana? Does your state require an approved stamp company and does it say that the stamp maker needs a copy of your certificate? Run in the next state election if you want to make the laws. The less government in our lives, the better!

Kudos for Harry!

Hi Kristen

I appreciate your post. Here in Alabama I can walk into any stationery store and order a notary stamp w/o providing id or a copy of my commission, so I wasn't surprised at all when NotRot didn't require that I sent them a copy of anything. Personally, I'm okay with the current procedure because it expedites my orders and that's what most important to me. I guess there is a possibility that someone else in Alabama could be using a stamp with my name on it but....based on what we can Alabama notaries can charge (.50) I doubt it! (smile)

Re: Thanks

Personally I think that it should be illegal in any state to be able to obtain a notary stamp at any outlet w/o proving one's commission. With identity fraud and mortage fraud on the rise I feel that anything that can be done to stop any Joe Blow off the street from obtaining an official stamp which would entitle him to commit a fraud should be done. MHO only.

Re: Thanks

Don't ever move to Michigan, we don't even need a stamp and I don't see any notary fraud here!!!
