I'm a long way from Berthoud Pass. That's the "high country" and I mean really high. I'll be praying for those poor souls. I am afraid that all the snow is far being over and causing us a lot of untold heartache. God help all the people involved. Thanks for the heads-up and your concern.

He lives on a mountain top 50 miles SE of Denver. Is that the 'plains'? I just didn't know where the pass was located. Thanks.

look on a map and find I-70 going West out of Denver. Look for Idaho Springs and you should see Highway 40. Follow it and you will see the towns I mentioned earlier.

My prayers go out for the safety of those trapped
Route 40 runs east-west through Tennessee, where I'm at. Having come from upstate New York, though, a little town about 30 miles from the Canadian border, I'm way too familiar with the fear of whiteouts, icestorms and avalanches. Hopefully the highway officials will be able to dig out the buried cars before the inhabitants run out of air.

Re: My prayers go out for the safety of those trapped
It's at the first hair-pin curve on 40. The highway goes over Berthoud Pass to Winter Park Ski Area and on to Grandby then cuts across going to Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, Craig and into Utah. They are retrieved 6 people and have full rescue teams/dogs looking for others. The highway will not open back up today.
PAW, is your friend in Elbert County? If so, its southeastern Colorado. I've lived here all my life and to the best of my knowledge, there is no Elbert, Colorado and it doens't show up on a map.

Re: Showed up on my map!!
Yes, that's southeastern Colorado -- not the high country. This is where all the cattle are dying because the ranchers can't get to them and the Army and National Guard are dropping hay from the air. It's pretty nasty out there, as well. My husband has been blowing snow out there all week, working alongside with the military. His company makes the snowblowers used for airports and he is clearing roads in an effort for the ranchers to reach the cattle.

Re: P.S.
All week my husband has been out around Lamar, Las Animas, Springfield and Pritchard -- closer to both the Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico borders blowing snow for 14 hours per day. After he gets finished with Highway 101 today or tomorrow, he will be reassigned to help another Army gorup in another area. His company is doing this on a volunteer basis and not billing the state or getting reimbursed from any government agency.
