OT May be..,. Help computer prb
I have an icon that showed up in my taskbar... kind of like a red stop sign with a white x in it.... i rolled my cursor over and it says: your computer is infected.... I thought it was my virus software .. NOT..... there was no virus until I clicked.
I got rid of the virus McSherriff or sheriff something
but I cannot find the trail/path to get this icon off my taskbar... and yes it is a big deal ... If some1 clicks on it viola... the virus is back.... I have MS win 2000 on a PC

How is your computer connected to the internet?
Do you use a hardware and/or software firewall? Do you use a cable/DSL modem AND a router? These are things you may need or want to install if you haven't already. If they are installed, maybe they need to be checked for proper configuration and access limitations.

Re: How is your computer connected to the internet?
Without a firewall and/or router, your computer is "hot". Which means the IP address associated with your connection goes directly to your computer. I'm sure you've seen all the patches to Windows and the browsers with concerns of vulnerability. Well, it's through the "hot" connection that hackers and malicious software attack. A properly configured firewall will only allow the necessary ports to be open to the internet. And a router will allow for NAT addressing so the router will have the "hot" address, but the computers behind the router will have an internal intranet address. (See How NAT Works at http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm)
