Tech insight: Slow printing

Beside image scanned file which contribute to slow printing is that it (may) also has to do with how your printer is connected (parallel/usb/ethernet aka network). The difference in connections are data transfer rate, the max transfer speed for each type are rated as:

Parallel ........................................... 2.5mbps (MB/s)
USB 1.0 (Low Speed)....................... 1.5mbps
USB 2.0 (Full Speed)........................ 12mbps
USB 2.0 (High Speed)........................480mbps
Ethernet 10Base-T............................10mbps
Fast Ethernet 100Base-T...................100mbps
Gigabit Ethernet 1000Base-T.................1000mbps

Theoretically, all connections are effected by length of wire. The best transfer rate for a parallel connection is 6ft max.

USB transfer rate is effected when other sources are connected which result in resource sharing of the main controller, where rate of transfer is reduced. Wire length should be 10-15ft max?. To verify if your computer has true high speed USB2.0 is by checking under device manager to see if it's labeled as "Enhanced usb controller".

Ethernet/network connection is the most reliable with constant transfer rate up to 50ft+ wire length. Fast Ethernet 100Base-T has been around for awhile until recent advancement to Gigabit-Ethernet to move along with the Duo-core technology where network transfer rate is up 10x of Fast-Ethernet. The new built computer for my wife is Giga-E ready, but I'm more than happy with the current 100mbps speed to my printers.

I'd suggest everyone to take advantage of the "n" equipped on purchased printer. It's there for a reason and upgrading printer memory is only 1/2 the solution. Not sure how Brother printer work, but HP have a "network printer connection wizard" soft you can download at HP website. You can either install an extra PCI network card or use a network switch-hub with the current one.

Also, get Adobe 8.0 if you haven't done so. I tested against v7. It's got the smoothest, quickest data parse and spooling; an e-docs academy winner. The only unforeseen problem would be with a not up to date service pack in windows operating system.

PS. I've adopted this idea of posting a weekly subject suggested by Charles/ca sometimes ago. I thought it's a good idea for NotRot focus'07.

Happy MME (Mid Month End) to all,

Andy

Last night I got rid of the Adobe V8. It was running about 1/2 speed of my version 6 and drove me nuts! I tried every setting and driver known on my HP 4200, but it was just slower than the V6. I know a lot of people here are getting better speed, but it wasn't working that way on this girls machines. I never did download V7 to my primary computer because others had reported problems.

:-(

Thanks for posting Andy.

Joan,

I had a friend who had the same problem. What had happened was with all the playing around with Adobe on her machine had left lots of broken pieces. So when version 8 was installed, the installation program saw that some modules were already there (albeit incorrect version) so the new version did not install. Manually removing all the Adobe files and directories and then installing Reader v8 went without a hitch and speed was good. You may want to try that approach, especially as time passes and version 6 may not be able to provide you the service you expect.

Andy, I'm trying to locate "network printer connection wizard" on HP site. Does download say specifically network printer connection wizard?
