To Sue_PA: About attaching loose certificates

Sue, way back there somewhere, you asked about PAN's recommendation on loose certificates. The information you got by phone was incorrect. We go by what we publish in the Practical Guide for Notaries Public in Pennsylvania, 27th edition, page 43. Please note, it's PAN's policy not to use the expression "loose certificate." We say "attached document" or "separate sheet of paper." (I was outnumbered in that battle.)

The procedure:
1. Affix the attached document firmly to the back of the customer's document. PAN recommends stapling to lessen the chance of the notarial wording being separated from the document.

2. On the separate sheet of paper, note the date and title of the document to which it is being attached - for example, "Thomas S. Dillon Deed of Trust dated 11/17/2005."

3. On the customer's document, write "certificate attached," or similar wording. The customer may request that you cross out any existing notarial wording on the original document; however, it is advisable to have the customer cross out and initial anything on the document itself.
