".then a title co called and asked my fee for a 35 mile trip w/e-docs...offered me $60"

Are you sure that was a TC, and not someone from an SS pretending to be a TC?? I can't believe a legitimate TC would offer that low...

Had a call from a title company this afternoon to do a signing at least 40 minutes away for $60. I was told that's more than they usually pay. She also said if she could get my fee approved, she would call back. Guess what? (She hasn't called back.)

This seems to be the trend lately...

I had 5 calls in 2 days wanting me to do edocs, drive from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes and they could go all the way up to $90. and that was making very little profit for the company with that fee. One said they only pay $40. any more and I said "well I hope you get someone to do it for that" and I KNOW THEY DID, because not one of them called back. So, unless they gave up and paid the last notary they called as much as I had quoted, there is someone out there working for minimum wage and I'm sorry, but I can't aford to do that with the cost of overhead being what it is.

Think about this, please before you jump to conclusions...

Look at it from their point of view: Call 3 notaries & offer $50. 1st 1 says $75, 2nd one says $100; 3rd one takes the $50. End of problem. Same scenario: But 3rd one says $75 also. You really think they're going to bother to call you back? No...you might now be booked, so they'll just 'take the 2nd $75 offer...here & now."
You can play with these scenarios forever, but my point is "When they've made enough calls & it's getting late--they grab the next offer.... and let all the other notaries THINK they found somebody for $50 because it's not expedient to go thru the list again and a possible/probable side benefit is that the next time they call you, you might just be foolish enough to grab it on the basis that 'something is better than nothing'." Whew.... that was a sentence and a half.

I fully understand the concept Lee, and here

in Maine we don't have an over abundant amount of notaries for them to compare fees with. However, on occasion some HAVE actually called back. The ones that have called back are on the day of the closing from the SS that has refused my quote and they say "the notary that was assigned can't make the appt." some of the reasons have been "she's sick, her daughter is having a baby, she ran out of paper, she doesn't have a printer" and then they change their tune and offer me anything just to get it done. Maybe the SSs should have a list of "midpriced, dependable notaries and "low priced, hope they can make the appt. notaries" lol

Re: I fully understand the concept Lee, and here

My post wasn't directed at you--just the concept that 'somebody is taking these cheap fees'. When, in fact, they probably aren't. I'm in much the same position as you. Yes, I do get a lot of callbacks, too. Often get a lot of calls from different co's for same signing, too. The ones that really kill me iare 3 calls from same co. & we're fussing over $10--and, no, we've hit my minimum & I won't 'negotiate further' with a co. I've never heard from before and probably won't hear from again.

I was driving home from an appointment the other night at 6:30. Phone rings- SS needs someone for a 7 pm 1st and 2nd e-doc closing that night. Told them I could probably make it by 7:30 in order to have time to run home and print docs. Fine, they said. We pay $75 for a 1st and 2nd with e-docs. I wished them lots of luck. I think this was an all-time low offer for me.
