Being a signing agent

Hi everyone. I've been a notary public for a while but I wanted to become a notary signing agent. What's my first step to getting my first signing? Do I need to contact different title companies? Let me know. Thanks.

Start by reading message # 33325

Then start by reading this forum last to first.
Things aren't as easy as they seem.

You wont get any help here ~ People will reply with snide comments about the NNA, tell you that you are stealing from them, and basically go off on you.

Check out some of the other forums on the 'net... These folks def. are not the most friendly =o)

Good Luck!

BrendaTX posted a link down below of some docs to get familiar with. And if you can, take a course, a good one that is, to learn loan signings. Just being a notary is only a part of doing them. As Mysti said, its not as easy as it seems on the surface. You will come across situations that if you are not prepared it will ruin you and not to mention may hurt the borrowers you are doing the loan signing for. The responsibility to know what you are doing in this biz in quite high.

Eric2002 misleads you by taking things out of context. this

is site for Professional Notarys. Clearly stated in the masthead. What others (Misterella and Lisa/Wi) told you was the truth. If this was not a nice place to come, these folks wouldn't bother to tell you to use the search button and ref. certain messages. It is up to you to go about your decision making process individually, and their advice was meant to possibly save you from hardships.

Now, how nice is that?

Hi Lisa. I am actually very familiar with loan docs because I've been working in the mortgage and real estate industries for a while. What I don't know is how to get the business.

If anyone wants to PM me with a tip that's fine. Most likely I live in a different state than you do so I won't steal your business or anything. I don't see very many Floridians posting here. Thanks.

Re: Being a signing agent...there are plenty of FL agents

here. Sylvia/FL can tell you whether it is worth it to get started in your area. She covers Florida. Try a zip code search before you spend any more money.

Well thats a good start, but unless you have actually worked somewhere doing loan closings, I would still respectfully still suggest taking a course on loan signings.
As far as comps to start working for, signing central here is a good place to start and make google your friend. And read, read, and read some more. There is all kinds of comp info on here and other forums. Its like digging for gold, hard work but the payoff is worth it.
Good Luck in your adventure.

There are lots of Florida signing agents. Not all post here, but I do know that some that do not post still read the messages.
Where in Florida are you?

Orlando is over saturated. You are my competition, along w/

many others here, whether they post or not. It's been slow for most of us, and some have widened their areas. I now do 7 counties, not just 2 or 3.

You are so right! I live in Casselberry and there are 470 notaries registered on Notary Rotary within 20 miles of me.

That is definitely a saturated area.
Incidentally my husband grew up in Orlando, graduated from Colonial High. He was actually one of the first students when it opened its doors.

I recommend The Signing Regency Training Guide which is sold on this site. I also had over 10 years experience in the mortgage industry and thought I knew everything about documents. Reality was that I was only familiar with the documents my company used. When I started witnessing loans for other companies I ran into forms I had never seen before. By searching on this site and reading the SR Training Guide I became more confident in what I do. I don't post much but I read just about every day and I use the "Search" button just as frequently.

You couldn't have picked a worst time to start.

The bottom line is that there is not enough work to keep the seasoned professional
busy. We are all scrambeling for the very FEW closings there are. Florida is over-saturated with notaries thanks to the NNA and these new notaries are working CHEAP, CHEAP and bringing the entire fee structure down to peanuts. We cannot survive on these new low fees and still the NNA keeps bringing new people in with the lies of BIG BUCKS. If I'm correct I think Florida or California has the most notaries in the entire nation. We need more notaries like a hole in the head. Most on this board are very helpful, knowledgeable and hard working.
We've been at this a very long time.....right now times are ROUGH and the few dollars there are to go around.....well EXCUSE people if they too are trying to keep their business afloat and survive. We can't share our contacts, phone numbers and "how to" with people who want
to be our competition and live just down the road. Good luck to you and my best advice is to look for areas of work that are now booming such as medicine and other areas that are now in demand. The gravy train in the real estate/mortgage industry has temporarily left the station. Hopefully it will return SOON but at this point don't hold your breath. Please don't take this personnally.....we ...the oldtimers are having a very difficult time keeping our businesses afloat. GOOD LUCK!
