Do you have a favorite pen that you use for closings?

Not just yours, but ones you offer the Bo's. My favorite is the Uni-ball Signo 207. It's a gel pen and writes beautifully. The bo's always comment on it when they are done. I love this pen and it helps with fraud prevention. I had two of them quit on me today and had to go to Staple's to get some new ones. Just made me realize how much I love these pens for my job. A little pricey, but I like the feel of it and how easily it glides over the paper. What's your favorite?

I love the Pilot Precise V7 Fine point pens. I carry both black and blue, they have a little window on the side so you can see when they are about to run out.

I used Office Depot brand of Foray. I absolutley loved them and so did the borrowers. I gave many of them away. But, I can no longer get them. I'm down to my last boxes of black and blue. I am heartbroken. I will try the 2 mentioned here, although I am skeptical about gel pens. I have seen in instructions that NO Gel Pens may be used.

Did they discontinue the Foray??? Because I absolutely love those pens... thats what I use... I just ordered some at least 2 weeks ago...

I liked Foray too!

The reason that they say no gel pens (IMHO) is because of the many fruitloops who would use hot pink, orange, deep purple, etc.

Ancient pen marks are not so important any more. Everything is recorded by electronic means now and seldom are the hard copies kept.

I like the Pilot Precise V7 Fine point pens as well and borrowers often comment on how much they like them. If I especially like a borrower, I will give him/her one!

Funny you should ask that. Many years ago I began a quest to find a perfect Mobile Notary pen. One with a great feel, thick fast drying ink and a round bottom to rub my new mobile Notary client's credit card receipts. I found the prefect pen in the Pilot P700. I buy them Black & Blue and by the dozen.

I used to use nice pens, but I lost so many that I was constantly buying new ones. Borrowers were always taking them, whether I offered or not. If I asked for my pens back, they act offended. Now, I just carry a supply of Bic Stic pens, in black and blue. If they want to keep the pens, fine with me. As long as they get the job done, they work for me.

I use Pilot P700 and I let the borrowers see only 3 pens, if

they try to take one, I just tell them I need it for my next signing.

Too funny, bigdog - I beta tested those for Staples

Those were the samples I received to beta test for Staples a couple of months ago, bigdog. They are wonderful pens, and my borrowers really like them too. I then went to Staples and bought more in both black and blue ink. I let the borrowers know they are using a security pen to sign, and they appreciate the extra measure of caution.
It's worth it to invest in a pricier pen - even a little thing like the pen used can impress the borrowers with the quality of your work and the company they have chosen as a lender.
Sometimes borrowers would like to keep my pens, and usually I just say that I need them for the next closing. Occasionally I will give a pen to the borrowers though, like the very sweet elderly couple I signed last month. Value of pen - around $1; value of the big grins and heartfelt thank you - priceless.

Re: Gel pen smears, not recommended...

I guess in Texas the local title company and legal folks are neater because that's what the closing rooms have in them in this area. A bowl of hard candy, a cup of blue ink gel pens with the company's names on them and a bowl of chewy candy, and then...there's a bowl of chocolate candy.

My gel pens don't smear!

I don't know what kind you've been using, but I've been using the Velocity's for 3 years and they don't smear at all. We used them at my last law firm. I found them as I have a severe wrist injury (2 failed wrist surgeries) and the more I write, the more painful it is, so I need something that writes very easy.

Re: Not even purple glitter gel pens?

Thanks for all the responses. I'll try a few of those brands mentioned the next time I need new pens. But I really like the Signo. And I have never seen instructions stating no gel pens. But as far as smearing goes, that hasn't been a problem with the Signo pens. The ink drys very fast.

Re: Not even purple glitter gel pens?

I used a purple metalic gel pen until it ran out at a law firm. I guess it lasted for about 2 months. Signed all the notary acks, and lenders instructions with it. No complaints from anyone including the attorneys in the office. I loved that pen!!

I like the bold 1 mm gel pens for me and the borrowers get papermate ink pens.

When I had nice pens, they wanted to keep them, and since it wasn't going to get me any more clients, I go cheap now.

I D E T E S T fine point or ultra fine point pens. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Re: Do you have a favorite pen...they do too ! :O)

Pens are fun at closing.

One closing I get a laugh at still,,,, the borrowers signed and I was double checking signatures as I made their copies (at the title co). I found a doc that was not fully executed, so I took it back to the closing table and asked them to sign.

OOPS....they started looking back and forth and around... “no pen”.......... they had pocketed every pen at the table ! OMG, that was so funny to me. Of course, what do you say but ... “You took “all” of them ?” LOL........... they were busted, knew it, I laughed and they laughed ...... I told them not a problem, the pens they used to sign the docs were probably out of ink anyway after signing all those docs, they really did need the extras to have a supply.

But seriously, if you want to keep your pens (the ones w/caps), take to cap off and hand them the pen. They will not try to keep a pen w/out the cap...works every time ! (just a tidbit if you are low on supplies)
