Do you think I was unfair?
Ok I was at work and some guy comes in looking for a notary. I was called over and the guy asked if I could notarize 4 documents for him. I said "Sure no problem, It'll be $8 a Seal (4 total Seals i all)." He looked at me and was like well that's to much and then said forget it and walked away. Haha did I do something wrong, shouldn't be charge $10 a seal? This was me on a good day too.

ok...maybe I'm missing something...your state ALLOWS $10.00 PER seal or even $8,00 a seal? Dude, if that's what YOUR charging AND getting it...I'm moving!

Re: Do you think I was unfair? - Doc
Yes, in Florida the allowable charges are $10 per notarial act. So every time I put my seal on a document then - cha ching, $10. And I get it If the person has more than one document, then I usually charge $10 for the first and $5 for each one after that.

I have people walking into our office all the time wanting notary service and I never charge because they are in our building.
I don't have a problem with that..... except, you know, I am at work trying to meet deadlines and they just hang around until I'm available which is sooo distracting that I can't complete what I'm working on knowing they are just hanging around in our lobby.....waiting.
What really po's me are the ones that will come in over and over.... and then....at some point will apparently feel so comfortable that they won't even bring in the doc... just the sig and acknowl. page. (What a DA.) But the worst is when they act put-out when they have to go back to their office and get the doc....(ya know, I'm only notarizing a signature they say)... I can only imagine how they would feel if I charged. (our management office has told everyone in the building they no longer have a notary,,, that tells the abuse of the cheap-o's)
Giive the problem people the website for FedEx if they have a problem..... or better yet the phone number---that auto sys is alway a treat !

No, but I might have told person that I can charge $10 per notarization, then told them the discounted total fee. If they go to a bank, they won't get done as they only do their docs. Other companies feel pretty much the same way unless they have sign out front. JK/TX: what a hoot to send to FedEx phone # to get lost in their system!

No you were NOT unfair I sometimes also give discounts,I let them know what the discounted total is.Some will go to find someone else but most will pay.I always wonder what they ended up paying after using their gas to go some where else.

OT: Della, you've got me laughing...
I always wonder how much gas people are wasting driving across town for the cheapest gas and then sitting in line for 10 or 15 minutes, at least. Penny wise, pound foolish, as my grandma used to say.
Disclaimer: My husband and I owned and operated the most expensive place in town for many years, so you can take what I say for whatever you think it's worth!

I work in a law office so it's pretty much expected that we do favors of notarizing for people who come in looking for a notary yet we certainly don't advertise that! We most always accommodate.
I feel that it's your business, Michael. If you want to charge for the notarizing, the do it.
However, I will say that in the local UPS store I go to get things notarized and they generally charge me $6 for the first and either a $1 or nothing for the rest. Go figure. I'd think that they should charge $6 for each. They have given me as much as a $30 break. Go figure, but bless 'em for saving me the $'s.
However, I do refer a ton of work to them for general notarizations.

Yeah I thought I was fair somewhat. Here in ocala I figured he had no where to go but a UPS store. SO I called ahead to a local one and the prices were $7 a seal I agree, between the gas to get there and the aggravation of driving he should have stayed. Some people just want things for free these days!
After he left I was thinking of just throwing a lump some number and use that discounted idea and see if that works. Actually if I said $30 he would have saved a whole $1; it's a mind trick

Yes, it is a mind trick...
why do you think prices are $2.99 - less than $3! Just think: less than... or the other phrase that comes to mind: only $2.99

Re: Yes, it is a mind trick...FWIW...
I find that a way to get the deal done and make the person happy to do it is to put the terms this way "...The State says I may charge up to $10 per signature (CA) but for you, I'll do it for $8" People will usually be more than happy to pay knowing they received a discount.
